    Sucker for punishment!!!!

Just bought another Disco 1 - 300tdi, auto SE7. Body is pretty good, belonged to a doctor out west. He gave it to his grand-daughter, who managed to cook it towing a horse float apparently there was a small fire under the sound deadener on top of the head (mice had moved in whilst it sat in the Doc's shed).

    Now the fun begins

According to a reliable source not involved in the sale, the engine turned over fine half an hour after they put out the fire, but it wouldn't start. Owners partner, (who claims to be a diesel mechanic) couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start
Bought it as is, cheaply enough that I can afford to rebuild the donk, and still have a reasonably priced Disco.
Found coolant in the sump - but not mixed with the oil, simply lying under it. Sounds like the damage (head gasket or head, maybe) could have been done after the engine shut down (possibly via a heat spike with sudden shut down) so now to start the tear down and see whats what.

I have just done a similar thing, purchasing a non-runner and getting it back on the road. The coolant in the sump may well have been mixed a while ago as it has had sometime to settle and separate.

    good luck

Well, she's definitely been very hot. Head gasket has delaminated, and the too inch or so in pots 2&3 are scored badly.
Time to look for another donk, I guess

mine also failed in between 2 and 3 and there a few hot spots on the sleeve but i think these old donks are pretty forgiving so im just going to clean up and put a new head gasket and reconded head ,,, see what happens
