    Aluminium roof rack

    Hi all!!!

I'm thinking of making custom roof rack for my D1. Does anyone have aluminium one? Even better if they made it themselves!!! I'm looking for weight reduction since it will be full length but won't do any heavy duty work. And also I just can't bear those 30 cm distance from the roof ones.

    Thanx!!!

My brother made me an alloy half roof rack. Because he needed bigger materials, the weight saving is not really there. I am actually thinking of making another rack out of thinner steel material to make it more slim line.

After some consultations I'm starting to lean towards steel now. It will be thinner than aluminium. What will actually weigh less......well I don't know at this stage. But at least I know the shape I'm after. It's a start I guess!

    this is mine.

i think it's not steel. as it weighs not much. me and a mate can easily mount it on the car. actually my mrs helped me get it off once too and she's only a little one.

it's before and after i painted it. and one mounted to the car when i first got it. had to remove the factory rails in order to fit.

Looks good mate!! Although too far from the roof for my taste. I still haven't started mine, so still don't know if I'm gonna go steel / aluminium!

yea i was thinking about cutting a bit off the sides to bring it down but it's a huge amount of work for little gain. now that it is in black it looks a lot nice on the roof. seems like the gap isnt as big. i know what you mean though. the design of this one is a good concept though and then you could just put shorter legs on it to make it more streamlined.
