cruise only works on hot days

After I reckon a year of struggling with an occasionally working cruise control, I've finally pinned down that it works when the outside ambient temperature is warm to hot. I don't mean the car interior, I don't mean when the engine is hot, I mean when it's a hot day. On a cool day, never works. Even when engine temp is right up in say stop/start traffic, still no good. But a hot day - say 27, 28 degrees or more - and the cruise control works fine.
Any ideas from anyone? Sure would be appreciated.

The vacuum pump for it lives up front near the LH headlamp and is probably at the point of seizure. They can be dismantled and cleaned.

Thanks. Yes I thought either the pump or speed sensor connectors/wires, expanding with the heat off the road. Can't see where those wires go to but.

Well the pump was as clean as a whistle inside and works perfectly, solenoid holds, hoses and diaphragm don't leak - and the speed sensor wires theory is flawed given the speedo always works. And again today, no cruise this cool morning, worked fine this hot afternoon.
    I'm stumped.

that fact that that the issue is intermittant and it works when cold but cuts out when hot sounds like a vaccum leak to me. Double check to make sure none of the hoses have a split or crack.

Another month and still battling this problem - I've now put a LED on the pump connections which confirms that the issue is power related - LED lights when I first hit the cruise steering SET switch, or accelerate with the RESUME switch, and flickers when the ECU is supplying variable power to the pump. But when the cruise is not working, no light. Given three replacement test ECU's, this says to me that teh problem is the power circuit after the ECU but before before the pump. Replace that wiring I guess is the next step. Grrr.
