    Rear stub axle seal

    Hi Folks.
I have had a rear oil leak from around the stub axle and I just pulled everything apart to find the small inner stub axle seal had fallen off and was just sitting there inside the axle housing.Any ideas so this won't happen again would be muchly appreciated. Also am replacing wheel bearings due to the inner one had totally fallen aprt, all bearings had come out and was in a real state.Heard a grinding noise the other day,at least that solves the noise I was hearing.
    Cheers Shane

If you had a colapsed wheel bearing, that would put a mechanical sideways pressure on the seal and could cause it to pop out I would think. New bearings and seals should see you right for another couple hundred thousand KM.

Thanks Bacicat,my thoughts also.Hopefully all will be fine with new bearings and seals.Have to wait for a new hub first as that is a bit worse for wear from the bearing failure.

While you are at it, convert to oil-lubricated bearings. Early cars were oil-lubed and never had a problem. Later cars used grease.
