Clutch Release Lever - Nylon Insert

    Hey folks,
I am putting a new R380 in my disco and am replacing the usual parts as i do - release bearing, spigot bush, slave cylinder etc.
I am putting in a new nylon insert also in the release lever that sits over the ball joint, as the one that is in it is all cracked up. Anyone know how to replace it? Is it supposed to be glued in there with some type of special glue?
    Thanks, Ben

Do you mean the plastic clip on the slave rod ball?

    Or the fork pivot ball?

Well I have mine apart now and almost back together and I can't think what you're talking about. The fork has a metal clip that attaches to the metal pivot ball on mine ('95 manual TDI Disco). I'm no help sorry.

    Ok.
Where the ball from the gearbox pushes into the socket on the clutch release lever, on mine there is a nylon insert (think of cartilage on an animals shoulder socket).
    Here is the replacement part:
Land Rover Parts - CLUTCH LEVER ARM NYLON INSERT - L/ROVER S3+DEF+DISC+R/ROVER (4+5 SPD)
I presume this insert allows for smoother operation instead of metal on metal. Presumably this insert will still need greasing however. This insert on my release lever is cracked and falling apart hence i am replacing it. I just dont know if it meant to be glued in place or just sits there, held in place by the pressure of the metal clip you mentioned.
    Thanks.

What year is your disco? I can't even see it mentioned in the workshop manual, although it's for 1995 onwards. I'm thinking it's an early type as the part is listed to fit RRC/S3/Disco.

Where I'm going is, do you have the workshop manual for that year?

look up on youtube. there is videos called landrover toolbox from craddock or paddocks spares. one of them goes into detail about changing clutch. i would send to you but dont have access to youtube at work.

if it is what im thinking of, it just clips into the clutch fork (pivot end) and the push rod/shaft goes though the middle so the ball joint stops in the clip. it feels pretty flimsy when loose out of the car but once pressure from the slave is on it, it doesnt really need to do much.

there is also another little flimsy plastic clip on the thrust bearing to the other end of the fork. has little ends which fit into slots on the moving parts.

the ball joint clip will need to be installed whilst you have everything out and be careful when putting it back together as it is near impossible to put it back when the bellhousing is attached to the engine. make sure the rod always stays with the bellhousing/clutch end and not in the slave cylinder when you pull apart. or else you will have to pull the bellhousing apart to get to it again.

look up the video im talking about. has everything you need to know on there. except for slighlty greasing the splines of the input shaft and on the thrust bearing. very slightly.

In case anyone else wants to replace the same nylon insert - here is the new nylon insert versus the old one:

The insert just pushes in and is held in place by the clips that hold the lever onto the pivot ball.
