    '98 tdi Blowing Instrument Fuse

    here's the situation:

Our '98 tdi auto is blowing the instrument panel fuse (fuse#14 (10 amp) on the central panel under the steering column). This kills all instrument indications and freezes the fuel gauge until it is replaced.

The fuse can be ok for some time - even up to an hour when warm, but then blow (I think on engine acceleration) - (power surge?).

There are no obvious shorts to any of the instruments.

Your knowledge and thoughts on the matter would be appreciated and hopefully will be helpful - thanks

Could have some fun ahead of you. If its a Defender then the driver's side parkers are on the same circuit. I've had the same issue for a year and could only fix it by pulling power for the instruments off the ignition switch and wiring the drivers side parkers off the passo side (LED lights so no issues).

    Could be:

Trailer plug wiring which takes power for parkers from drivers side parkers circuit
Any of the drivers side parkers wiring/globes/holders
A short in the parker lights wiring which could be at rear, in main loom through the chassis, along the bulkhead or along the inside of front guards. No real protection for any of it and I found half a dozen worn through wires in my search.
Instrument and instrument lighting wiring behind dash
I'd check trailer plug wiring first, then parker light connections, then the parker wiring that runs in the guards (remove flares to access).

I spent two days on this job and had to assume short was inside chassis in the end and rewired to get around it.

    Good luck!

Just reread your post and it's obviously a Disco and it's posted in the D1 section...so not sure if anything I've suggested applies or not.

All ideas are helpful steane, I'm hoping someone may have already fixed the issue. If I can identify the cause by elimination then as you say, I may be able to wire past it - thanks mate

Oh, and yes, it is a D1 😊

Wire a 12V 100W globe/lamp across the blown fuse, then you can explore the exact circumstances that cause the fuse to blow. A bit like a self resetting circuit breaker with a failure indicator.

Had a simimar problem once 96 disco 300 tdi. My instrument LIGHTING stopped working, just lights for the dash, instruments were working. Found out that fuse shares rhs parking lights also. But I just replaced the fuse and it's been good since then.

Use the globe idea mentioned above. It helps in lot of cases!

In case it helps anyone - in the above case it turned out to be a short in the speed transducer on the gearbox
