Best brake pad for braking performance

6 years is too long. Manufacturers recommendation is 2 years. 5 years (I think) is a reasonable max limit depending on humidity and usage.

When you did the fluid change, I reckon rebuilding the calipers could have been beneficial too.
new seals clean out, inspect the condition of the pistons.(unless you know this has been recently done!)
If you do so, also think about braided lines to replace the old ones.

I've yet to do this on a car, but on a motorbike(well the one's I've done) the difference in feel is clear and marked! Well worth doing.
But then again on a bike when your finger's are frozen solid, every last 0.001% difference feels amazing.

I don't mind the hardness of the brakes as such, I want a bit more feel to them.

All defender calipers bolt straight up, they have a larger piston so they are better brakes. check to see if you have one brake line to your brakes or two if you have one line then it is a simple case of unbolt disco ones bolt up defender ones bleed and away you go, if the two lines then you need to get the newer disco proportioning valve and lines still simple to do. I am going to do it when the spare $$ come up - it's not expensive though

check that you get the right ones though, vented or solid
