    Smile New Newbie says hello

Hi all you lovely ppl, I wanted to finally say hi after a long time owning a disco and lurking on Aulro.

So first up, the ol' girl (Genevieve). Bought her a couple years ago for a simple reason of wanting a car that can do it all, mainly taking me to all the weird and wonderful corners of Australia, and being able to tow a car + trailer. Shes a '96 3.9L V8 7 seater on gas. I bought her with the only modification being 245/70/16 tyres (instead of 235s, naturally that didnt last long) with the heads off the engine as previous owner boiled her and it needed more work than he was willing to do. Nice thing is shes the ES model adding a few nice features. Hopefully the pics will come up somewhere (not sure how to post yet, or search for that matter).

Ive done a few mods here and there, such as a bullbar + winch, spring lift + new Bilstein shockies, 285/75/16 Federal tyres on 16X8" rims, UHF, roof rack, rear seat delete (drawers coming soon), bonnet gas struts, slotted front discs, and a few others.

Anywho, im hoping to do the rear brakes soon, Ive read somewhere on this forum that a single front brake caliper rebuild kit will do both the rears? Is this true or are the front pistons longer than the rears?

    Hope to catcha out there,

    Cheers, Rob

That looks bloody terrific!!! I love Disco snow pics they make me feel warm and fuzzy

Damn I want tyres that big on mine, but mine is a 300Tdi and I don't know how well it'd handle it...purely for looks though, so probably won't do it because I don't have that much money to spend on me just being a goose haha

Slotted discs hey? Does that improve braking performance? Mine is a '96...

    WELCOME TO AULRO!!!

    Great forum

Hi Rob, yes correct you will only need 1 kit to do both rear calipers, just check if you are splitting the calipers the O rings are different from the front ( you will find these are a separate part not included in kits.)

Thank you all for the welcome!!

Cheers Young Angus. Yeah the tyres were a bit overkill frankly, it was a toss up between 235/85, 265/75 and the 285/75s.. went with the 285 as they are one of the more common tyre sizes, and didnt want to get the 265s and later regret not getting the bigger size. Theyre on 16x8 with -25mm offset so was always going to have to do flares anyway.
As for the slotted discs, on my setup I havent noticed much of a difference in braking performance, although Im hoping that doing new rear braided lines will provide some more pedal stiffness (done the fronts earlier). We shall see..

Mario, thanks for that. Not looking to split, just refresh with new seals and pistons (stainless ones if I can find them). Will be looking for a front rebuild kit now and some rear pads and bearings hehe list never ends

Oh n more piccies never hurt!!

    Cheers, Rob

from what ive heard braided lines make stuff all difference. there is very minimal buldging in lines, not enough to feel in the pedal. mostly for looks or racing cars.

with bigger tyres brakes do feel much weaker. i went up to 245/75 from stock and hate the brakes now.

the slotted brakes will not improve braking. the thing it will improve is brake fade when the discs get hot as they cool better.

a good upgrade for brakes which i would like is to put slotted discs which then can accommodate defender calipers. larger pistons, more pressure, better braking. look it up. before this you can check your system though, to make sure no leaks in MC or booster and that vacuum pump working ok.
