Relationships don't like cars that don't work and just take up lots of space. Sorry to hear that was the honeymoon experience...not sure your wife will ever be able to look at that car in a nice way again haha my wife hate's my D1 too and it's got nothing wrong with it, but it does take up our only spot in our underground car park because it doesn't get driven much.

How much are you talking about spending if you just pay a professional (or semi professional) to do the work required?

I don't think you should sell it for parts, sure you'll make a little more money but the time and pain in the ass you'll give both you and your wife aren't worth it. Keep the whole thing or sell the whole thing and cut your losses and move on if you choose the latter, your wife will appreciate it and so will you after it goes. Sure you'll miss it, but you'll feel better, trust me.

As for keeping it, if it were me and I'd spent all that time on it, and the rest of it was nice (??) then I'd be just getting it fixed up ASAP by someone else if I had the money (or could sell something to fund it) and getting it to a point where I could like it again and most importantly, trust it. If you can't get it to that point easily enough, sell it as a whole thing and wash your hands of it. If it's going to be a problem child forever, and you've got to be honest with yourself about that, then cut it loose and let someone else with more time and less wife make it their problem and they'll probably love you for it...make sure you get a half decent price for it though if you're leaving all the accessories on it.

Not sure I will be able to look at it in a nice way again either!

We really have almost no money left after the wedding and honeymoon despite us doing a great deal of the wedding stuff ourselves and getting a food truck for food etc and using a tent and camping grounds mainly for the honeymoon, so really a fix comes down to me doing the work probably. Oh. We had A LOT of financial help for both wedding and honeymoon from friends and family so we are eternally grateful for that.
A cheap wedding doesn't exist these days. Wonder if it ever did but I guess that can of worms is for another forum!

Yes it seems like that is the general consensus from all who have gone down this road. A very clear DON'T DO IT!!!!

All very valid points especially the bit about the 'problem child'. Yes it may be a problem child. I don't honestly think one would know until the remaining issues are fixed and it had a few runs on the board though. My gut feel is that yes it is a problem child however. The car isn't what I would call nice no. The previous owner resprayed it himself from the beautiful original Charleston Green to white. Didn't mask off areas so there was overspray everywhere and used self drilling screws by the bucket load to attach items inside the vehicle. The headlining is falling down also. In hindsight we shouldn't have bought the car but a lot of the stuff (apart from the paint) I found out later after we had bought it. Second hand car, right? Same story everywhere.

As for your D1 maybe love can develop over time? Like love in an arranged marriage? Your wife may, after many wonderful trips in your noble steed of glory, develop a genuine and ever lasting love for the beast

    Transmission is out!

OK so I caved much to my wife's chagrin and took the transmission out. Will post photos of the damage when I get a chance. That top bolt was a **** to get out.

Looking for a replacement second hand transmission now and I will change the rear main seal while I am doing all of this since I have it and it needed it anyway.

Any pics yet? It may be that you could get another housing and put you bits in... well, pay someone to put your bits in.

Hi mate. No the housing was cracked in about 50 places. Did a real good job and I didn't even have all of the bits to put them on anyway. Thanks for the offer though.

Transmission out, Do the rear main as well. fI your doing the work yourself, Read, read and read some more. There are numerous posts on most repairs on this and other Land Rover sights. I can assure you that if you research you can do most repairs yourself. If you did the timing belt all other repairs are do able. Take your time and things will work out. Ask plenty of questions . Who knows there may even be a forum member close to you that will help you out. You will for ever kick yourself if you get rid of the Rover.

Thanks for the inspiration. I do indeed read read read. Very fortunate for forums, youtube, workshop manuals online and the Haynes manual. Between them all and common sense one gets the general idea...

I did regret getting rid of the last D1 I had. Especially in hindsight it was a VERY reliable car...

As with anything mechanical .. I don't think there is anything that is 'reliable'.
That is, it may have been reliable up to a certain point, but that doesn't mean it would have continued to be so beyond that point.

I'm curious tho, didn't it feel as though there was a vibration as it was getting loose before it broke and did the damage?
