by remote control, can we assume that you're referring to the central locking?
Does it have an alarm too?
If it has an alarm, it'll have a sonic type sensor mounted at the b pillar, I think on the passengers side, maybe the drivers side .. can't remember as mine doesn't have one.

As for programming a remote for the D1, just did a quick search and found this info:

    info on D1 remote programming:

maybe it can help you, sorry can't tell you if it works or not, as like I said I don't have a Landrover remote(I fitted an aftermarket central locking system that actually works! )
    Arthur.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

What year is it? Those instructions are for a single button remote. Mine has a 2 button and can be programmed with a Nanocom or similar. The switch under the bonnet is only one of several sensors, including the motion sensor inside the car.

    Nanocom connects to a D1?

It has a socket, but you can only do limited things with it such as the alarm system, and on mine at least, the fob. Cannot access the ECU, which is the fault of the ECU, not the rest of it.

One of the cheaper fault readers would probably do it in place of a Nanocom. But although my D1 is one of the last 1998 MY, it is does differ in some ways with Australian delivery models. But my point was the OP may have a two button fob, where the instructions are for a single button.

    Yep! got that.
Mine has central locking only, but I got/have no fob, and it used to play up sometimes, so I bypassed the LR central locking, and fitted my own aftermarket control unit with remote, along with all the new solenoids in the doors.

But on my '99 made 300 Tdi, I can't get either my OBD2 or nanocom to do anything via the OBD2 port at all. Is yours a V8?

Note too tho, when you do a keyfob addition using the nanocom on a D2, the D2 remotes also have two buttons, and when it comes time to press a button to get the BCU to recognise the remote it makes no difference if you press the lock or unlock button on the remote.
I've tried that now on two keys.
My point here is that I'd say wouldn't hurt to give the method in the video a try, as it costs nothing to do so. But if it does work, it shouldn't really matter which button on the remote is pressed, my thinking is that all that the CPU's receiver is looking out for is the remote's individual code while a signal is being scanned for.

I have a 96 tdi disco with the two button fob. I used the hawkeye connected to the port to program the two fobs (that I got second hand, didn't come with my disco). Hawkeye is very straight forward to program fobs (and other alarm/immobiliser features).

Yes, it is a V8. Cannot remember, but I think the OBD port can also read and clear ABS faults, along with what Tom has written. It also has Lambda sensors, which may not have been fitted to Australian delivery cars.

Hawkeye can read and clear ABS faults (iirc, give live ABS data too), change and test the alarm/immobiliser settings, program the 2 button fobs. As we don't have the electronics on diesel motors, there is nothing it can do with the tdi. I am unsure of the V8s.
