It's a bit far from me (unless going up the coast), but sounds like the torque converter output splines, or main box A-clutch. Possibly output splines if you can hear it engaging when changing gears but I doubt it.

Both will need the box out. The torque converter is a cheap fix, the A-clutch less so (but still managable). MR have experience with both.

Cheers for the info, likewise I have confidence in MR's ability, once it gets trucked there on Thursday it's not leaving till it's fixed 😀 so im not too worried, thanks again for the extra info

    It was an expensive day

So just been to MR to check progress, they took the transfer case off and the transmission is stuffed, won't budge, luckily they've got another which they will check and fit when they get time, so at least they have gotten to the bottom of it but it's sure to burn some holes in the wallet. There gonna check the transfer case for damage too but they seemed to think it was fine, so I'll have one to sell shortly.

    A fitting conclusion

so picked up the disco today after they put in a new auto, seems to be running very well and I was very excited to pick up the beast. For a replacement and fitting the cost was $2300 which was significantly lower than I first thought so I picked up a track rod guard they had on sale, I'm gonna pick up an apt sump guard too as well . Overall a excellent service by MR, with a 3 month 5000km warranty on the auto!
