My solution however was to mount my jerry cans on the roof, I have four and keep my two water cans snugly behind my front passenger seat, alternatively if you could source a swing which already has one or two jerry can holders on it that could work.
I've got 4 jerries (10 litres each) that fit into a box that goes on the front of the roof rack. Box also contains a 5 litre engine oil, and 1 litre each of gear oil, atf and brake fluid, as well as the trusty grease gun, all packed in with rags. Only fill the fuel ones when needed, and use them as soon as I can. Helps move a little weight to the front axle as well.
