Thanks for the replies folks. Time to have a think what to do. Car has 144,000 on it and is in otherwise great condition, I noticed a small amount of rust when I bought it and knew I was taking a gamble. There is a tdi with a blown engine for sale in that the owner claims has no rust, so might be worth a look. It was always going to be a project so no hurry.
Ok, i’ll have to check there too. I’m currently going through my D1 looking for rust and treating as I go. Initially had a couple of spots at the base of the drivers side A pillar, which when i gave them a poke, i now have 2 small holes to get welded up. I decided to do a thorough search to see what i have. So far nothing major....considering it’s spent the 12 years I’ve had it mostly outside.
Check your Alpine windows. of the seals look a bit lumpy that indicates rust underneath. Check the front footwells and boot floor. Good luck with it

96 3.9 R380. A private import in 2007 to SA originally. No rust (and I have looked) 7 seat, dual manual sunroofs, great interior with the exception of a sun damage dash pad and I have removed the headlining as it was a bit tatty. Still not sure what I am going to do with it ?

UK, just privately. Has some pommy features that are different to what we got here from LR dealers. No factory cruise (pretty much standard on our V8s), headlight adjusters, etc.

I had a disco with rust in same location. Elsewhere very little. It's a common spot.

Grind it all back, remove all the cracking seam sealant, weld on new plate, reseal all the seams and cold gal the lot. It doesn't have to be pretty, no one can see it.

Do both sides, also check seam seal under the windscreen and in the footwells.

If seam sealant is compomised, chisel it off and renew. There is no paint under the sealant, they painted over top. So once the sealant is compromised, it rusts out pretty fast.

Found my thread, same issue: https://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery...wing-rust.html

Not a tidy example, but rust was removed and seams were sealed.
