    3.5 v8 no start

Hey all, first post and likely not the last lol. I recently brought a 92 3.5 v8 efi discovery and have been dumping money into it since the day I got it haha, though I'll say 90% of problems or worn parts were due lack of servicing and abuse on the previous owners behalf.

My current issue has me a little stumped though. About 3 weeks or so ago I went to start it and it wouldnt, just kept cranking over and every 3-5 seconds it would fire on one cylinder. Just one little pop.. I let it sit for about 10 days and then when i tried it again it fired straight up, ran a little rough but once warm all was back to normal. And now it's gone back to not starting, just cranks and every now and then shows a hint of life with one or two cylinders firing then back to nothing.
It has spark, plenty of fuel and I can hear the fuel pump priming, but no joy. can anyone point me in a direction to start looking?
    Cheers.

    Welcome to the forum. 😊

Could be a lot of things but I’d start with fuel pressure if it just pops occasionally - very probably got a faulty fuel pump. This lives in the top of the tank. The older RRC’s had an access cover for this but the Disco won’t, so it’s a bit of a **** of a job if that’s what it is. When you turn the ignition on, can you hear the fuel pump?

Also, there’s a Schrader valve on the fuel injection manifold just after where the incoming fuel line connects and the fuel pressure can be checked here.

    Welcome to AULRO.com

You should be able to hear the fuel pump run just on ignition,, yes they do fail but sometimes kicking the tank gets you one last start.

The good thing about changing fuel pumps is you get to check the rear floor for rust

The D1 injection system is pretty simple and there are some very clever members that still use it...

I'm sure one will be along soon.. ( cop that Gav)

    Like 3.5 flapper rangie? No.
No Schroder valve in fuel rail like a 3.9 either, well at least mine hasn’t.
As said, check fuel pressure, may be a dead pump or fuel hose in tank damaged. Maybe sticky injector/s. verify it has spark and timing is somewhere near correct, ignition systems in these can be iffy, search bim024 module upgrade.

Often this can just be drooly old injectors flooding the engine.

A new set of plugs often does wonders .

The procedure to start a flooded engine is to hold your foot to the floor on the accelerator, do not pump and it may start. The 14CUX is designed to have this as an anti flood clearing mechanism.

I havent checked the actual fuel pressure but as said above I can hear the pump prime when I flick the key on. I did notice the fuel filter looks ancient so I grabbed a new one today to swap it out with.
I'll have a look to see if mine has a shrader valve. Cheers for the reply.

Yep, can hear the fuel pump prime when I flick the key, mechanically I understand alot, but when it comes to talking about looms, relays, electronics etc I'm not so confident. At first I thought it may be the cool giving a weak spark as when I did a resistance test it was a bit out of spec but when I swapped it for a new one same problem still.

I've seen the word "flapper" come up a few times now, what exactly does this refer to lol. Assuming it's to do with the throttle setup?
