    Hi Tony,
I'll be interested in seeing pictures of the bore, when you wind it over or remove the piston.

Have a read though Shonkys 300 Tdi rebuild thread. He found a few inconsistencies in the manuals, as well as a few traps for the inexperienced.

    Rebuilding my 300Tdi

Mike at Britannia Restorations on Youtube has lots of good 300 Tdi stuff.

As well as the wealth of knowledge here.

With your new R380, a proper manual transmission fluid is better then ATF, I use Castrol Syntrans and the shifting is much better than ATF.

    Thanks Tony,

I've been watching Mikes channel for a few weeks now and its a good reference for sure and I bought that AULRO manuals a while ago as well as being aware of the variations in TDi's in the heads alone From Turners and Rimmers, Britpart etc and any job is worth research especially 26 years after manufacture I guess.

I'll digest Shonkys thread as well, always good to learn from others.

    Syntrans eh?
When I did the fluid change on the driveline after the first week driving the TDi I used Penrite 80/90 which has an additive (Its blue) and that improved the 2/3 shift a bit so I'll see how the Castrol goes, Oils aint oils eh :-)

    Cheers,
    Tony

    Wow, What a mess!

I can only echo what others have said in regards to Turner engineering. Unfortunately I did not have entirely smooth sailing dealing with local suppliers. Turner have everything you need, only ship decent stuff, are reasonably priced and shipping is relatively quick considering the distance.

I've just logged on to hopefully finish up my rebuild thread, but I'm keen to follow along here and see how you get on.

I note that like all good Defender drivers, you also have a sensible W123, so at least you can console yourself with that.

    Regards,
    Andrew

Yup, a 280E with a missing K jet system at the moment but I console myself with the handful of W116's not to mention a Volvo or 6 However Land Rover Du Jour was my old Rangie today, LT95 4 speed for that authentic coil sprung experience :-) (No wine involved)

My Pet oil burner expert had a look at the head this afternoon and had a few choice expletives and he suggested that it'd been cooked well done at some stage but the interesting bit was the thread cut all the way to the chamber in the glow plug hole ......... Not to mention the heat cracking ...

    As for Turners?
    Begone foul temptation!
Talk about Head porn and yup I read your thread and noted Conrods aint Conrods........ Some of them were downright ugly

Haven't read the update but unless I find a replacement runner to drop straight in for the time being I cant see myself doing a rebuild on your scale, those days are gone for me so it'd be my Pet oil burner guy that'd end up doing it over time and Project Binky time scale (Costs me a fortune in Tea and Iced Vovo's too)

Learned a thing or 12 from your thread though and loving the Videos :-)

Yes, those Jetronics can be a pest when they are unhappy! Not an issue on a 300D, but at the expense of refinement and power.
Sounds like you have quite the fleet!

Glad my musings have been helpful and/or entertaining to you. In retrospect, I probably went overboard on my build - I certainly could have slapped it together and not worried about a lot of the details and it would have been quite adequate... but where's the fun in that?

Sounds like you might be off the road for a while. You might get lucky I guess and find a running 300Tdi to swap in, but as others have said any replacement will almost certainly be old and have high mileage and likely have issues of its own. Probably not so many as your existing one though.

    Hi Tony,
Have you progressed with this? Or is it the to hard basket?

I'm chasing a lead on a 300TDi Disco auto while I do some research on some TDi stuff thats unclear to me at the moment regarding the 1, 2 and 3 hole heads and blocks and im going to rebuild the engine I have but properly and considering the age of the 300TDi's and as you mentioned probable condition a new head is a definite.

Do I think you went overboard? No.
Time wise it dragged on but I suspect that since then the supply chain will have improved plus I have your hindsight to lean on.

It wont be a quick job but if im spending sheckles on an oil burner I want it to be a damned good one and also capable of extra boost and reliability.

Id also like to try the automagic trans again because the last 300 TDi I had use of was hellishly slow on takeoff but it was also 20 years ago and I believe the injection was stock and hindsight tells me this was why it was slow on initial throttle response of lack of it.

Sooooo I suspect im going to end up with an auto and a Manual TDi at the end of the day :-)

Well I just got the rego renewal and im going to pay it, Plus I have a bootload of new parts and I have a wishlist for more that needs some more research so Its a Go on the rebuild but im taking my time to get it spot on instead of plonking a new slug, conrod and head in the thing.

Plus im about to pull the trigger on an Auto TDi as an interim measure which gives me time to play with the busted one and do the transfer case and plonk a better R380, Clutch and machined flywheel in the thing.

I'm also selling the Valiants off much as it pains me which funds the projects, a 4 poster and some new workshop goodies coz im getting too old for the stupid amount of projects I have lol and being an Auto masochist im sticking with Land Rovers and old Mercedes and clearing everything else.

Good to see it's progressing slowly, all the best with it.

The 1,2 and 3 hole head gaskets are are different thickness to allow for the piston height in the block.
Once the bottom end is built you measure the piston height and then choose a gasket.
There is no 1, 2 or 3 hole block as such. And the heads are flat , so their all the same.
