The important thing to notice is it should have a drilled transfer gear, being a 1997 model. This means the mainshaft splines will be getting a dose of 80w90 regularly to stop fretting. The grey pasty stuff can sometimes just be from infrequent oil changes, 80w90 does that, and stinks too!

Sorry, should've mentioned that if your mainshaft spline is wet with oil and looks like new still, then the drilled gear is already installed in the transfer case.

JC, couldn't the 'grey stuff' be caused by moisture emulsifying the oil ?

Or plain and simple - water in the TC

Possibly is moisture, or even years and many KM of metal fines. The place where this stuff collects is like a grease trap in a drain. The oil washes past it and dumps heavy particles like tiny metal fragnments and normal oil borne 'sludge' from infrequent changes there. It is sometimes resembling grey plasticene or play- doh(sp) and is very difficult to clean out.

Old oil can be grey too Ladas, like you said moisture in the oil can also be from infrequent oil changing.
