The important thing to notice is it should have a drilled transfer gear, being a 1997 model. This means the mainshaft splines will be getting a dose of 80w90 regularly to stop fretting. The grey pasty stuff can sometimes just be from infrequent oil changes, 80w90 does that, and stinks too!
