Thread: Differences between D1's

    Between vehicles there is sometimes quite a bit of differences. Specifically wheelbase left to right. I have had 1 D1 12mm shorter on the left side wheel base than the right, some hovering around 5 or so mm, and yet others have been spot on


    This also goes for Castor angles, though difficult to measure accurately without a wheel alignment machine, I would hazard a guess and say they too can vary between vehicles.

    The chassis were once all hand jigged/ set up for welding, not sure if this was the case in late D1's, but the worst offender (12mm)WAS a 1998 'WA' chassis number model.

    Thats pretty bad, for some reason i thought that "hand built" meant built with pride in one's workmanship.
    Could that be caused by heat distortion due to welding the chassis up too quick rather than just not measuring carefully enough? Even so, it should still have been de-stressed and straightened out....

    It all depended on whether Chelsea or Man' United won on the weekend...and whether the pie van had just turned up before the arc welding torch was struck.

    You're kidding right???

    I've seen some amazing dodgy welds on Landies, even found a section where they had completely missed for about 2 " on a 110's chassis once
    so I guess Ozscotts reply was right on the money! As time went on, things got worse. Supposedly some of the early 80's were the worst in the brit motoring industry, but I've seen worse workmanship in Disco's and Defenders than 2 door and early 4dr RRC's.

    (I still love them (Landies) though)
