You have to remove the airbag first - there are 2 torx screws through 2 holes on the underside of the steering wheel - Torx 40 I think. You will require a long torx key similar to an allen key as the socket type torx keys don't fit into the holes, then unplug the airbag, remove the centre nut on the steering column disconnect the rotary coupler and the hardest thing can be thumping the steering wheel off from the underside. Be very careful to guide the rotary coupler wires through the steering wheel first, before lifting off the steering wheel.

Just when I thought it was easy

Ok disconnect the battery to disarm the airbag.

AND then wait 20 minutes, before starting work.

Thanks guys.

I was also advised by the local LR dealer to disconnect the battery, wait 20 minutes and then apply the foot brake a few times to drain any residual current from the system. Also as a safety precaution do not put your face to close to the airbag when removing it.

I found all this out after removing it about 10 times to find a squeak in the steering column, without disconnecting the battery. When I restarted the vehicle my SRS light came on and wouldn't go out again. Had to be reset by the LR dealer. Got lucky not to set the airbag off on myself.

Wonder what the Ambo's/Rescue do if the airbag doesn't go off, wait twenty minutes?
