I had a similar problem, engine was running very rich, everything else was fine apart from sooting up the plugs, and it wanted to stall when I put it in reverse. It turned out to be the fuel pump, the theory is that the pump wasn't delivering enough pressure so the spray pattern was bad and it wasn't buring correctly.
Whats the top end speed like ? After I replaced the fuel pump, the fuel regulator died 200km later and it was running very rough after that, top speed was about 80km/h, it was like having a diesel.
Try pulling the plug off the AFM while the engine is running, I think if the engine cuts out then the AFM is working.
