    D1 Rough Running

My 1995 D1 3.9 V8 EFI seems to be running a bit rich lately accompanied by a rough, chugging idle almost as if a plug is on the way out (sort of like a carb when the chokes left on). The idle speed is ok and it's not missing on acceleration.

I changed all the leads, plugs and dissy cap and rotor, cleaned the throttle body and stepper and changed the coolant censor. No improvement, so I'm thinking it could be a duff mass airflow meter. It's a 14CUX Hotwire system Part # 5 AM ERR5198.

I notice that there are a couple of sellers on ebay (Oxflow being one) who are selling new AFMs for a variety of vehicles at quite reasonable prices.

Has anyone purchased one of these? Any other sources around? I believe new LR items are very pricey.

Other than the AFM what other items should I check?

I had a similar problem, engine was running very rich, everything else was fine apart from sooting up the plugs, and it wanted to stall when I put it in reverse. It turned out to be the fuel pump, the theory is that the pump wasn't delivering enough pressure so the spray pattern was bad and it wasn't buring correctly.

Whats the top end speed like ? After I replaced the fuel pump, the fuel regulator died 200km later and it was running very rough after that, top speed was about 80km/h, it was like having a diesel.

Try pulling the plug off the AFM while the engine is running, I think if the engine cuts out then the AFM is working.

Before you do anything else try this. It may be all it needs. No, really.

    Remove the AFM multi- plug.

With some pointy nose pliers, give each of the male flat pins on the AFM a gentle slight twist.

Spray the pins & females with electrical contact cleaner.

Replace the plug securely & go for a drive.

    Report back here.

Also could be the water temp sensor for the ECU having a dirty connection or faulty.
I think this is the most likely.
Check that the resistance across the two terminals is about 200-400Ohms at operating temp, that is if you haven't put in a cool thermostat.LOL
Sometimes you find just taking off and replacing the plug fixes it.
It is the sensor with the injector plug on the RH front of the manifold behind the thermostat.
If you have put in a cool thermostat or your water temp gauge is reading low replace with an 88c thermostat.

OOPS! Yes also the leads. A friend found one quite loose & that fixed it. Peel the boot back carefully & push each one in with a fine screwdriver or such.
