ok last week i put a new thermostat in it and also a new radiator cap but today driving home it went up to the last white line again but when i turn the heater on it came back down to half so what should i be looking at now?

Landfills around the world would be smaller if not for thermostats changed for no reason....if all sweet to date and sudden overnight temp guage change then I would say faulty viscous fan for sure. An easy and quick fix to boot.
Spin the fan with the engine stone cold. If it spins freely, then the coupling is stuffed. If it is reasonably stiff or has resistance then you need to run the engine up to op temp while stopped or just a short squirt around the block, then hold the revs up to about 1500-1800 rpm and listen for the coupling to lock in. If you stab the accelerator, the fan should rev with the engine.
If it doesnt then shut off the engine and again try to spin the fan. Any free spinning when the temp guage is reading high is a faulty coupling.
Diagnose this before anything else as the next thing would be rodding the cores and in an auto, that means engine and trans fluid lines need to be removed also.
Cheers
Andrew.
My 10/87 build Range Rover 3.5 EFI is on its fourth temp guage sender unit in three and a half years. When the sender has failed the temp guage reads very high.
Food for thought...
would a buggerd viscous fan cause it to use a bit of coolant??
dropped it off at the mechanic this arvo he is changing the fan and getting the radaitor done and finding the coolant leak, will keep you guys posted
Thats what I did.
Rodded, new cap, new hoses, thermostate and engine flush.
peace of mind, hope all goes well.
one of the rad hoses was leaking and its now got a new viscous hub (cheers stu at rovacraft) and the rad has been done natrad said it was 80% blocked all good now though should be sweet now
