so maybe pull the radiator out and get it rodded , aparently mine was over 50% blocked.....
it seams to be a common prob as ive read in other threads...
Dirtdawg .... I would do all of the above ... and NOT drive it till it is all done

... Cause if you keep driving with it getting to the red on the gauge .. then you are running a HIGH risk of killing the motor

Landfills around the world would be smaller if not for thermostats changed for no reason....if all sweet to date and sudden overnight temp guage change then I would say faulty viscous fan for sure. An easy and quick fix to boot.

Spin the fan with the engine stone cold. If it spins freely, then the coupling is stuffed. If it is reasonably stiff or has resistance then you need to run the engine up to op temp while stopped or just a short squirt around the block, then hold the revs up to about 1500-1800 rpm and listen for the coupling to lock in. If you stab the accelerator, the fan should rev with the engine.
If it doesnt then shut off the engine and again try to spin the fan. Any free spinning when the temp guage is reading high is a faulty coupling.
Diagnose this before anything else as the next thing would be rodding the cores and in an auto, that means engine and trans fluid lines need to be removed also.
    Cheers

My 10/87 build Range Rover 3.5 EFI is on its fourth temp guage sender unit in three and a half years. When the sender has failed the temp guage reads very high.

    Food for thought...

    It shouldn't ever use coolant.

Coolant loss means a leak somewhere.
