New Exhaust System for V8?

I want to replace the exhaust sytem on my 96 D1 V8 from the Y junction back. Something a bit more efficient, with less back pressure and brings out that distinctive RV8 burble a little more than the standard system.

I was thinking of going 2.5 inch pipe, replacing the OE centre muffler with a straight through type and the back box with something more sporty, but not sure what. As this is a daily driver I don't want a system that's too intrusive or loud, but one which is a bit more pronounced (and efficient) than standard.

Has anyone got any recommendations as to what I should delete, replace, etc?

The MA series onward(94)exhaust system is quite efficient for a 3.9 engine in standard trim. If anything, the front engine pipes are where the restriction is due to their diameter, but it is necessary for good low down torque. Unless it is leaking etc I would leave it alone. I do agree they are a bit too quiet, but at least they aren't intrusive at highway speeds, which gets monotonous after a few hours...Replacing the rear resonator with a 2.5" fibreglass packed straight through resonator will make it sound good, and not intrusively droning.

I started off with a 2.5-inch system starting at the down pipes from the factory headers with just a rear muffler. Was a little too barky so I had a resonator fitted aswell. Where abouts are you? Castle Hill Exhaust Centre in Sydney did mine.

just have a play with removing the mufflers and see what you can stand

This is a straight through muffler in the middle then no muffler at the back. It is very loud and drones a lot on the highway. Its ****ing awsome

I've got a DII 4.0ltr and have replaced the exhaust pipe from the Y juction back with a 2.5 inch Stainless steel system using a Magnaflow muffler. The sound is absolutly awsome without a drone and it's not too loud but load enough to make people stop and ask what I'm running under the bonnet when I pull up at the local shops. At highway speed you can heardly tell the difference from normal until you push down the load pedal which give you a VERY NICE throaty roar.... funny thing is I've notice my fuel economy get better by about 3-5 litres/100. Best $300 bucks I've ever spent.

D2 have a way bigger bore front section and even with the twin cats and the necked down muffler inlets etc

, the whole system looks a little less restrictive than a D1 . The 4 litre with Motronic puts out different characteristics though to the old 14CUX system in the D1, it is way more efficient too. Would sound pretty good with the above fitted, any chance of a sound recording?
