i reckon an auto behind my 300tdi would be tops....mind you i have never driven an auto 300dti
Hi, I'm currently wrangling with the idea of switching from my D1 V8 auto on gas to a 300TDI for touring distance, and I won't be towing anything.
Do owners of 300TDI's think you need a manual to get the most out of them?
I know an auto offroad is very useful, and that manual vs auto is somewhat of a personal preference, but does the 300TDI engine go nicely with the auto?
I can test drive both, but won't be able to get a thorough experience of either in a somewhat limited test drive. So experienced 300TDI owners please give me an idea of what you think is preferable. Maybe you have manual and wished you had an auto - or vice versa.
Any feedback on either most appreciated.![]()

Mate go drive a auto Tdi
Then drive a manual
In standard form in my opinion a Tdi auto should be ileagal they are out right dangerous![]()
I had a 94 V8 auto update dash and changed to 95 5speed TDI 300 and I am very happy with manual gearbox and acturally prefer it but as you stated that is personal choice.
The fuel consuption on Hiway is great and can get over 1100 km on trips loaded but constant around town 750-850 depending on how I drive.
Have had a couple of trips where i did acheive 1300 pluss on a tank no town all Hiway but loaded. I have noticed on some hills that the TDI will cruise up them better then the V8, but if i got into it the v8 would be better as it would nock back a gear and then exceed the speed limit by a large amount the TDI would not do this but will keep at the limit or exceed it by a small margin.
My V8 around town was 450km per tank. I miss the sound but not the fuel.
Cheers Allan.
Love my 300tdi manual . But in saying that i haven't driven an auto either .
After having test driven autos and manuals before buying I felt you got more out of the engine with the manual. I felt like it gave me more control through the rev range compared to the auto and on some of my local hills the auto box struggled big time to find itself.
I did not get to test drive the auto box off-road but I think a well looked after engine and gearbox with manual may still be preferable.
My test was on 4 different autos an 2 manuals so I did get to see more then one and get a feel for them.
having owned both i think for 90% of driving the auto is much better than the manual.
if you drive the auto like you drive a manual it will be a pig, you have to learn how to drive them to get the best out of them.
if i ever own one again i would definitely go the auto.. so much nicer on and offroad most of the time.

Had manual in Deffie and two autos in two diesel Discos and imho the autos kills the manual. Highway - couldn't fault. Off road - you need to adopt a different driving style with the auto.
Economy - about 5% difference max.
FWIW
