    Worn igniton lock D1

Since i bought my 97 discovery last year one of the problems i've had is that both keys seems have quite a loose fit in the ignition lock, and in order to turn anything on i have to pull the key out out of the lock slightly. I have been told that this is caused by worn tumblers. Has anyone else encountered this problem and what did you do to fix it?

Try some Super Lube - a PTFE lubricant - about $11 a can from your local friendly locksmith and give the barrel a spray.
I tried this some time ago on my SII Disco and haven't had a problem since. Avoided an expensive barrel replacement or rebuild for a while.

Don't use a wet lube, get some graphite powder and use that.

I used CRC, and it worked for a few months then failed on the wife. I ordered a new one and had it shipped up for pick up that night and the RACQ arrived and cleaned then a few puffs of the graphite powder.... good as new, but I still changed it.

I used to use graphite powder on locks etc but the Super Lube is 100% better and is quite different to CRC. Although it is applied using a pressure pack spray can, the liquid propellant evaporates very quickly leaving the lubricating medium (the PTFE) to do its job.
And because it is effectively a dry lubricant, it doesn't attract dust.

I'll have to see what the local locksmith has tomorow in that case, because all have is WD40 and other "wet" type lubes it didn't do anything.

    Thanks for that Roger,

might have to find and buy some for the locks in the D2.

I learnt the hard way on the wet lubes

Hi, as stated above, dry spun graphite powder works a treat. I have used this on Disco locks very effectively.

I had a similar problem with my 98tdi. The key was loose and sometimes I couldnt turn the key on at all. I got a locksmith to come out and he thought I would need a new ignition but he had never worked on a pommy car(His words not mine)! He put me on to a locksmith that had worked on Landrovers and he pulled the ignition apart and gave it a good clean, put it back together and it has been as good as new since. That was probably 6months ago.

If you do need to replace the lock they go cheap on the UK ebay site.

Mine has jammed on me a couple of times, the most memorable of them all being at 4am one morning as I was about to head off to the airport for an early flight.

Anyhow, Bruce Davis said he's fixed tons of these and said they replace the worn tumblers and they work like new again. I'm taking my car up there for something else soon, so I'll get that done at the same time.
