    Thermocouple placement

Guys my pyrometer and thermocouple is here so I need to find out where to install the thermocouple.

As you can see by the photo I have circled where I think the unit should be installed would this be correct?????

    BTW its a 200tdi Disco

It's an OK spot if you don't mind measuring the temperature of only 1 cylinder.

If you can, it would be better to install at the throat of the manifold, where all 4 branches meet.

You can either tap it into the manifold itself like Murray (rijidij) did on his 4BD1T (if there is enough meat in the manifold wall) or make a spacer like I did (well, actually that you had laser cut for me ).

    The spacer:

As installed on the engine between the manifold and turbo:

On my old 200Tdi I had it were the manifold branches together, just before the flange where the turbo bolts on.

Thanks guys do I need some sort of sealing paste for the thread when I screw it in?? Also do I have to remove the manifold to drill and tap or will I get the bits of metal out with a vacuum cleaner or such??

I entrusted it to my mechanic. Whether he drilled and tapped it with the engine running, removed the turbo, or just let swarf crunch my turbo up, I'll not know.

Apparently using a magnet on the drill bit (to magnetise it) can keep most (if not all) the swarf on the drill bit. It also helps if you start off with a small pilot hose and work up in several sizes (Murray tapped his this way - see post #28 on his EGT thread that I linked in my previous post). He also ran the engine while drilling so that any swarf that did fall off was blown out of the manifold.

As for sealing it, there is thread sealer you can use, but at $30 a tube for something I'm only going to use once, I didn't bother. You'll probably find it's a tapered thread, in which case it doesn't need a sealant anyway.

    Good luck

Personally I'd drop the turbo, but if you grease the drill bit you will catch the vast majority of the swarf.
