Little leak of coolant, any quick fixes??? D1

    Hey all,

Well i have just change my water pump and thermostat on my 300 tdi. everything is fine what i did BUT i think the gasket between the engine block and water pump is shot!!! i've got a little leak on the bottom where the gasket goes in between the block and the part where the pump goes on. are there any fixes without taking everything off again.

    cheers simo

not really if you put that stop leak in your block what else will it be blocking?
you could maybe try some some sort of liquid gasket over the leak but thats just a band aid.

Same thing happened to me witht the thermostat housing I ended up taking it back off and refitting the original thicker gasket, the new one was hardly thinker than paper.
Maybe fit two gaskets on top of each other or nip the bolts up a little tighter.
Also could add a bit of liquid gasket if you re-fit new ones.

Just had mine done also, had a little trickle come out running down the side where the alt is.
Very annoying but not uncommon my mechanic said.

I had it fixed for under $300 and glad I did.

Depends on how much it is leaking and what you will put up with, to whether you need to change it or not.

No real quick fixes, maybe some sealant might stop it for a while but the pressure will push past it eventually.

Personally, any leak in the cooling system could result in major problems and potentially big dollars, so I would change it.

If is the P shaped gasket between the engine block and the housing that the water pump bolts to (not the gasket that comes with the pump), you should change it to a metal gasket and use some gasket sealant.
This is the gasket that should be checked when changing the water pump, as to change it you now need to remove the water pump again.

This is still a job you can do yourself, just a bit more involved than the water pump.
You need to undo a heap more bolts and move the alternator out of the way etc.
The bolts are different lengths, so make sure you note which one goes where.

Not a hard job, just more involved.

cheers matey for your input. Got it booked in the mech's on monday morning to change the gasket. i'm thinking when i bolted the pump on i must have over tightened the 3 through bolts on the pump and destroyed the gasket but should be all fix on monday for about $300 - $400. the leak is just a few drops after the car has stoped running so she should be ok by monday.

    cheers simo

Hey simone, If you have already pulled it apart once then save yourself some labor costs and do it again. Just make shure all of the old gasket has been removed from the engine block , did you fit a new gasket fitting the pump?. So get a new gasket and if your a bit unshure buy some flange sealant just to be shure, as long as both surfaces are clean and free from any marks you shouldn't have a problem with it sealing.

    good luck
