    300tdi highway/cruising performance

    hi all,

more questions for the brains trust!

In short, had a trip to Bendigo this weekend, and found the Disco really struggled on some uphill parts of the highway.

The car does have a bit of extra weight than stock. ARB bar and winch and had 3 passengars with overnight bags to suit.

Seemed the worst on long, gradual inclines, yet this is on the Calder Freeway, not exactly a "hilly" road.

A couple times each way, the car just couldnt maintain the 110km/h limit. Would lose speed up inclines (i wouldn't even call it a hill), once it dropped down to 90km i'd go back to fourth but even then it would only just maintain 90.
Would only get speed back once on flat/downhill road again.

    So, opinions.
Is highway performance just lacking with these motors once the load of extra weight is added?

Or, if it sounds a bit suss, what's there to check?

Its not a huge issue, i'm rarely on freeways or anywhere to exceed an ~80km/h limit, but it is pretty darn annoying on the odd occasion!

    Cheers

    Hmm
    so many variables.
    Do you run big tires?
How old is motor, tappets been done etc.

Has it had the intercooler upgrade and fuel pump tweak.

Mine will sit on 100-120 no prob, on steep slopes it will pull back but in fourth will want to go again.
Even with a trailer, it wants to go quite well, not like a chipped TD5 but still pretty good once the 2300 plus rpm is reached and boost is there.
try a injector cleaner and only go the BP ultimate diesel, made a bit of a difference from memory.

    Good luck.

Yeah - sounds like yours is sluggish. My '97 TDi Disco is definitely slower than a TD5, but it will still pull 110 up the Adelaide Hills Freeway (South Eastern Freeway) all the way in 5th if it's not full of people/stuff, and that is a pretty steep piece of road. If towing, I've got to go back to 4th, but still do 110.

I reckon you need to get someone to take a look at yours.

Valve clearances need to be checked every 10K. I have had a 110 dfender pick up an extra gear after a tappet adjustment!

    thanks for the replies!

went out and checked the easy things tonight.

Intake piping seems ok. airbox -> turbo doesn't look collapsed and the 90degree on the compressor outlet is ok.

Although there was A LOT of oil in the intake pipe from the oil/air seperator hose. I took the airbox -> turbo hose off, and the hose from the oil/air seperator was just resting, pointing at the ground. It was literally dripping oil. Again, not sure if this would be normal or not, but if it was a petrol car i'd be pretty concerned.

will try and check this weekend the tappet clearances (anyone got a link to a guide?) and the injector pump diaphram/plunger, as it sounds like these can sieze up over time.

Due for a tank of juice in the next day or two so will run a bottle of injector cleaner through it as well.
Wouldn't normally consider additives, always seemed a bit of crock to me, but i'm up a whopping $20 from the OZ LOTTO tonight, so will splash it around a bit!
