Where did you get the work done?

I know it's too late now next time look for a LR specialist as they do this all the time so by rights the bills should be smaller and the work better. I know you don't have the choice when these things blow up and then are on the back of a truck.

I took it to (a place in) Capalaba, because both of my brothers took their 4WD's there and the mechanic they go to was supposed to look after me.

They didn't do engine reconditions so they said I should send 2 doors down from them to a place called another place in Capalaba because they "all work together".

I only took it there so I could find out how much they would do it for and THEN I was going to call a LR specialist to see if they could do better. But they fixed it on me without even asking what I wanted to do.

You should be seeking advice from your state Consumer Affairs/Office of Trading etc. You can also access free legal advice in most states as well. Do some web searching I think and then get professional advice. But I would not be paying that bill - yet.

It was a long story short. The reason it took so long is because for 4 months the mechanic was trying to find a replacement engine. He failed to find one and recommended I got it reconditioned instead and that way I get a years warranty slapped on it too. So I had him send it down the road to the recon place and he the reconditioner bloke said it would be at least 2-3 weeks before he could look at it. So I waited 3 weeks and I actually went down in person and asked how it was coming along, he said he still had not had a chance. So I left him my number and I said to call me when he finds out. For about 3 months I didn't hear anything from them. During this time I rung the recon place and nobody picks up the phone. Working 6am to 6pm you don't find the time to go in and by the time you get home their office will be shut. I did ring the other mechanic (the one who told me to get the recon) several times and he never got back to me either.

They should really let their customers know what is going on and I think they should get you to sign a contract if there is any work to be done that will be over a grand.

I have gone to Legal Aid QLD and they weren't much help. Their advice was that it would be his word against mine in court and the only thing I could do to avoid that was to work out the scrap price sell it to him for that much and then pay him the cost of getting the quote OR to sell the disco and pay him.

Which is all absolute bollocks, I was really shocked that that was the advice I had received.

I have told him I will go to small claims tribunal if we cannot work out a better price. He has gone down as far as 7k, but I still refuse to pay that much especially when I literally said to him "I just want a quote so I can work out what to do, I doubt I would bother if it is over 4k"

I am going to offer him 5k cash and see what he says, otherwise I will have to go to small claims tribunal.

as far as having trouble getting the communication thing happening with some mechanics im hearing you, as for the price i would be laying the cards on the table and say to him, i since found out that the rebuild could have been done elsewhere for 4k i only asked you for a quote so im prepared to settle this beetween you and i and ill pay you 4k cash if not than i guess the next step will land us both in a courtroom, see what he says may be enough for him to think its not worth the fight ill take 4

Sorry to here about your dramas.

What pump, water pump? Did they diagnose that being the cause of the engine meltdown?
