Not cheap.... I had a quote a while back in Perth for a D1 V8, around $6000 I think it was for the full setup with injection.

Standard gas was about $3000 (tank in back), and with the twin tank underfloor setup about $4500.

However, my last D1 was on gas and I never had one backfire!
Ran perfectly on gas and petrol.
So they can be setup to run well by the right person.

If you don't have a snorkel and don't go underwater, a quick fix might be to replace the airbox completly with a pod filter.
I believe that can help with the backfiring, but more hear-say than facts.
Although mine had a pod filter when I got it, so maybe someone had already had a backfire problem.

You've already got the tank and gas lines so that helps but it is exxy - especially if you can't get the govt. rebate as your car is already on gas.

You will need to ask an installer.

This is what I did to replace the plastic airbox in my P38A after destroying a few times. I used standard LR parts. Bruce Davis once looked under the bonnet and didn't notice it until I pointed it out.

That is just an early rangie 86 + and disco to late 93 original filter housing, should be able to pick one up pretty cheap, should really find the cause of the backfires so it doesnt happen so often- an aftermarket dizzy would be my choice.

I'd grab a pod filter from any auto shop (around $30), a ~100mm long piece of tube, and a couple of big hose clamps.

Remove the whole airbox up to the MAF.

Attach the tube to the MAF, and then the pod filter to the other end of the tube.

Might be worth a try as that's how my D1 V8 was setup and it never backfired.
