Simon, a quick adjustment method is to make sure engine is turned OFF, then push throttle pedal to the floor slowly, about 1 inch off the floor there should be some resistance felt, that is the kickdown cable opening the valve in the gearbox for downshift. IF the resistance is felt higher up in the pedal travel, then it is too tight. You may want to start with backing off the cable until the resistance is felt right at the bottom of pedal travel, and see how it goes. IT IS IMPORTANT to have the cable adjusted with enough travel to cause the trans to kickdown, (IE resistance felt)as the cable is in effect a pressure adjustment, and noit enough will cause trans slip, too much will cause it to hold in gear.
The other adjustment is the position the cable is attached to the injector pump throttle lever. Most are on the second hole from the inside, try it on the first(Less travel) and see if it upshifts earlier.

    ...And report back

cheers for that jc, i have taken a pick of it and while checking it out i looked at the bottom cable and she looks like its about to break, now i take it that the kickdown is the bottom one, if so will have to replace it, how much to they go for??? it also has crusie control on there (After market) which i dont use and is disconnected.

What the??? That cable is in the furthermost hole, AND is adjusted almost all the way UP!!! No wonder it won't up shift

Remove the cruise control cable, and fit the kickdown cable into the hole the cruise was fitted to, and then try the adjustment technique I just described with the actual cable outer(2 13mm nuts on the bracket)

    ...and report back.

OH, and if the cable is frayed etc, then yes a new one will be req, get a genuine ZF one though, about $120 IIRC. They are a bit involved to fit, valve body needs to come off etc.

thought it looked a bit funny, DARN about the fitting of it, most likely get the spanner to throw one one tommorrow and see if he'll do a payment plan, would they charge alot for that??? Whats happens if that does end up breaking??? not sure i'll be able to afford it thats all.

If you have a look at the tread on the cable you should be able to pick up where it used to fit.(about 1/2 way on the photo?).
It'l be the clean bit. Same for the bolt hole.

Beter loose than tight if it's cloose to snaping.

    Cheers.

    Hi Joker,

I'd give it a crack myself, if only for the reason that I'd be learning a bit more about the operation of my vehicle in the process.

Using the procedure Justin specified, I'd at least get it set where it should be, even if the cable needs replacing. Like alien mentioned, less stess on a suspect part the better and the last thing you would want is for it to snap on the way to the spanners, adding a possible towtruck invoice to the repairs (duuno if they still drive without cable, my commodore was quite senstive to adjustment and even at 3/4 negetive adjustment wouldn't rev over 1300 revs).

    Cheers,

    Pando.

    Just had a thought....

    IF
said cable snaps, i'm gussing it could be driven in semi manual, holding it in gear and shifting your self?

Thinking this would get you home or to the spanners?

Mate just adjusted it and she running sweeeeetttttttt, no over revs just the way i like it, still the cable has frayed and looks like its on its last stran, so the kick down only works when you floor the pedal????
