Hi, do a search on these forums - on insurance ,it has been asked many times.
lots of info.
cheers.
Hi everyone,
I've taken to this whole Landrover thing with a passion, after getting a nice D2 only about three weeks ago that I intended to use for everything including off road work I decided after driving it for about two weeks that the D2 was way to nice to bush bash with, so I found a D1 with every mod on it I thought I might need and then some.
So of I went last week and purchased the D1, I find myself driving the D1 now more then the D2 which I also love to drive.
The thing is I want to insure the D1 for theft and third party, maybe even comphrensive if the price is right. I usually have everything through NRMA but they in general don't want to know about vehicles that have any mods done to them let alone something like this old girl. Plus they charged a fortune for comphrensive insurance on a bog stock D2.
So the question is does anyone have any recommendations on a insurance company that doesn't charge the earth and will insure a Disco that doesn't really resemble to much what it came out of the factory like. If their is decent insurance company out there with a good deal to be had then I would also change the D2 over as well.
Thank you in advance for any assistance.
Cheers,
Terry O'Neill

try Shannons....they reckon their for 'enthusiasts'
I have had some of my older cars with them and I will be trying them in a week or so when I get my modded D1 home as well.
At the moment I use AAMI and they cover all 'legal' mods on and off road.
let me know how you go.
I decided to check with the NRMA if they would insure a modified Disco after my comments and to my surprize they do providing the changes are legal. So my comments that they don't insure modified vehicles was incorrect.
I asked for a quote for comprehensive on agreed value and they said the maximum they would insure a 94 model D1 was for $7480, but they wanted $740 premium with a $600 excess and this rate with me having a 65% no claims bonus. Paying a ten percent premium is a bit over the top I feel.
So I asked for third party, fire and theft and that reduced the premium down to $175. So I accepted that quote and insured the old girl.
The thing is if the vehicle was damaged in a crash that was my fault I would rather keep the wreck with all the gear on it then collect $6900ish if it was written off. So I'm happy with third party and theft cover for now.
Thanks for the advice.
Cheers,

Interesting, I got a quote n a standard 95 ES D1 from AAMI and the max value they gave (saying it was actually over the book value) was 7500, premium 360 standard excess. They also insured my heavily modded D1 only being concerned about my age not the lift, wheels etc!!
My son however was knocked back on a vehicle with much less modifications![]()
my heavily modified D1 is insured for a bit over 20 grand agreed value with a premium of about 700 per year. Still cost me more than double this to build it though.
Hi Trobbo,
now you have made me wonder if I have undervalued insurance wise the D1 and what I should have it insured for? I have just put some pics and info up on it in the members ride section if your interested.
Cheers,
Terry
build cost and replacement cost are quite different. I think my disco is currently worth 12,000.
If it were to be written off and replaced starting with a 'clean' vehicle, the cost of build is in the order of 40+ adding up things like lockers, axles, modified winch and synthetic rope, laminating, custom bar work, hid lights, 4.6 engine, gas injection etc etc.
Agreed Trobbo build price and sale price are always vastly different but you have insured your vehicle at a price that would allow you to buy a really good standard one and rebuild it with alot of the good stuff you had on your original one.
I must admit I did seriously consider looking at yours but decided I wanted something with NSW rego and this one had engineers certification for many of the mods. I wasn't sure how easy or hard it would be to get something already registered in another state with so many changes registered here in NSW.
Cheers,
Terry
I was with Shannons, but they can't insure me offroad, so i switched to Australian 4WD Insurance. Agreed value, insured anywhere in Australia that's charted, even in sea water! They even matched my Shannons premium. They run through DGA insurance. Tell them I sent you :P
