sure was, i drove the bloody thing home (~250km) then the gearbox stuffed itself even though i had changed the oil, apparently you cant get the water out of auto's once its in there and its just stuffs them so yeah, changed that, also stripped the interior back to bare metal and cut and fixed rust holes and rust patches and re sprayed the floor, as for the motor all we did was took off the turbo pipes and emptied them then with the pipe off on the head we took out the glow plugs and turned it over until the water stopped coming out haha then we re attached the turbo but had the hose off where it went into the head and ran it and that ran all the water out of the intercooler - was sort of like a fire hose for a bit haha then yeah just put it all back together and changed the oil and she was sweet! drove it home as i said (all this work was done in the rain at cruiser park - not the funnest, and the oil there was $12 a litre, they sure know how to rip us poor 4wders off haha)

Shows how tough the old Tdi's are though!

Also got the price on the payout today! they say $6700.00 which im quite happy with, and i get to keep all the extras on it - which is quite a bit but the only problem is is that they want $4000 for the wreck which i think is incredibly steep!! they reckon thats what a wrecker would give them.... which i think is a load of ****.

ah there's the rub! I thought the payout was very generous!!

PS wrecking value would probably exceed 4k given it's a diesel - JC will know 'cause he wrecks these things all the time and I'm always amazed that he wrecks vehicles that I want to restore...it's a weird world

I've seen a rusty and rough tdi manual 1995 model, running with good diffs trans etc etc for $900

What Inter says is true to a point, we will decide on each vehicles merit as to wreck or restore/ sell. For example, Paul (My work associate) recently bought a 1998 V8i auto, low K's (122K) but dirty and accident damaged. He was about to repair/ restore it for resale until we needed the engine for a customer. That vehicle is now a wrecker.(Engine needed a cam and folowers etc as the poor old thing had been neglected somewhat, lots of idling and not enough oil changes, but after 2 oil changes and a new valve train she is as good as new)

I reckon 4K is too high, tell them to send it to auction and see how much they get, as long as the water damage is noted on the catalog description, it should go for a lot less. I just bought a 1998 Tdi auto with high K's, driveable but LHF damage for 1K at auction. That running gear is now about to be put in the LSE I found out that the engine is excellent, and the radiator and starter are new, it had a full tank of diesel in it AND near new tyres.

If it went to an auction to see what they could get then i would loose my car...? haha thanks for the advice i shal talk to them more about the matter because i was really hoping that they would only sell it for about a grand that would be nice.... then i could have 6k to play with

What I meant was, YOU go to the auction and bid on it. I reckon that you'd get it for less than 4K, unless there is a few there that want it badly. If you look at the history of sales of that particular model as a write off at auction, I think you would be suprised as to how cheap you can get one. I saw at the same auction I went to a low KM 1995 BMW M3 with undercarriage damage go for 5K !!!!

It's worth the risk I reckon if you have to pay 4K to get it back at the moment.??

where does water get into the auto trans ?
