I saw at the same auction I went to a low KM 1995 BMW M3 with undercarriage damage go for 5K !!!!

It's worth the risk I reckon if you have to pay 4K to get it back at the moment.??

    Just a thought.

Thought it might have meant that, i think it might be worth while doing that, although if i didnt end up buying it then i dont know what id buy haha because i dont really want to have to start all over again with the whole over heating problems in Tdi, i have just done a fair bit on the bloody thing! I'll see how i go - thanks heaps for the comment though.

Apparently into the breather lines, there are two of them that come from ontop of the gearbox up into the engine bay, i am thinking of extending them up onto the height of my snorkel from now on!!

ah !, yes i wondered about that, as i just replaced a box in my d1 i got to check them out and see where they normally sit. Taking them up higher, perhaps inside a snorkel sounds like a good idea, infact there's someone selling kits or the like for your diff breathers which include an air filter as well! if im not mistaken.

i think for the cost of just extending those black hoses, it would be well worth it, and something ill be looking into, especially after hearing your story.

    Diff Breather Kit

You're driving hard or on the brakes going down hill. Everything is hot and what's at the bottom of most hills - Water. The sudden cool down can suck up to 1 litre of water into your diffs through the diff or chassis mounted breather. Or worse, if the breather is blocked (when did you last check it) the water will be sucked in through the bearings and swivel housing. You can not beat the laws of physics... From there it's all bad for your diffs axles, cvs, bearings, etc etc...

Also, no vehicles have filters on the breathers. This means the air sucked in (even without water present) is likely to be dusty. You don't want dirty air in your engine - why are the diff gears any different? This breather kit has filters to ensure the air that gets to your expensive diff gears is clean and dry.

This is what the competition boys do. Run a kit such as this to extend the breathing point to high up the firewall or higher if your rig permits. Some utes have them up on the roll bars.

Being flexible it does not break. It is soft enough to stretch a bit and withstand sticks and rocks under the vehicle.

Installation requires no special tools and takes about 15 minutes for the 2 lines. There is enough material supplied to do both front and rear diffs for conventional wagon size rigs. If you have an especially long or extraordinary application please let me know so I can allow for the extra length. The one kit suits all.

Here's a water tip. If you stop in a river for a look see avoid leaving your foot on the brake and allow the rig to move a bit. The discs cool rapidly in the cold water but the bit of disc trapped by the brake pad stays hot. With part of the disc being cold and the other part staying hot causes the disc to warp or even crack....

    Subject: diff breathers

    hi,

would your diff breathers be suitable for use on gearbox/tc breather lines
    ??

    thankyou, Hayden.
    Hi Hayden

The diff breathers are ok for gearbox/transfer case lines. Best idea is to
fabricate a t-piece into the same line as diff breather to utilize 1 kit,
    rather than buy 2.

After having a D1 & now a D2, get the 2!! I had V8 on gas now TD5 with long range tank & a few other bits, SLS, ACE 7 seats, dual battery, snorkel. I just love it, especially the extra space. I suppose it all depends what you want from it now, I have 2 small kids so when I go away, I need/love the extra space.

I would love a Td5 but i have realised i cant really afford to spend my extra money i have put away... being a student i dont have too much money haha and it would be pretty silly to blow it all in one go!

Just contemplating some new options now, i have found a nice D1 on car sales for 7k and the bloke has spent $14,500 on the engine alone, and its had a respray, so alot of the serious stuff is out of the way that i had already done on my car, and because i can keep all the extras from my car (tyres, lift, batteries, snorkel, bar, winch, lights etc) this option is looking good, because my body was in need of some serious repair... and probably would have ended up costing me the full amount of what i got extra after getting it roadworthy... hmm
