    It's a write off....

    Hey all,

As some may know i recently drove my Disco 1 (95) tdi into a really big water hole at Landcruiser Mountain Park.... i have since changed the gearbox and done alot of mechanical work, and then found that i could get it covered on insurance so i though id get all the electricals fixed under that (which is pretty much everything electrical in the car)

Today i found out that the insurance company now wants to write off the car i am pretty sad about this because i love my disco and its been in the family since new... so i will be recieving a pay out for the vehicle between 5 and 7 grand and they said that i can buy the wreck back (im hoping that it will be under a grand)...

So really it seems like i may be making a bit of money from it, but im just a bit depressed about it all at the moment... haha

    So options from here, which i wanted to get some point of views with, include;

    - Fix my wreck with the money
    - Keep wreck and buy a TDI defender and transfer wheels etc. (this solution will mean i have a more rugged car that i can put through more pain)
    - OR soften up a bit and buy a nicer D2 (i have about 7k put away from when i sold my BMW) so combine the money and buy one for more a touring but still decent offroad adventures but in more comfort for doing it and for driving around town...

    What do you think?

    Fix the Disco.
    Johannes

There are people who spend all weekend cleaning the car.
And there are people who drive Discovery.

If you want to keep playing in big puddles of water, then probably the Defender is your best long term option. Depends, if you have consider what your missus might think (women generally don't think much of Defenders).

Sorry to hear about that. Must have been some rain since the last time I was there. Would that be the bit next to the decent size water crossing?

Are you looking for another Disco to replace it

i think i may be leaning towards td5 disco... mainly because i have a mate with one who was doing everything i was doing before i wrecked mine anyway... and i dont think id be doing fully intense stuff... in it atleast... i was thinking also when i buy the wreck i might just turn it into a full time offroader so i can afford to wreck it and have a car to drive still and something nice for touring and the longer hauls....

I have already considered your car boxer haha i would love it but being a student i dont think i could afford the petrol or extra extra rego....

Heres a picture for you too boxer, it was in the pig pen, stupid idea...

I don't know anything about these things (thank God!) but what are the legal ramifications of resurrecting a legal write-off? I mean, you can use the insurance money and your own labour to fix it technically, but what's involved in re-registering it?

It depends what write off it is.

could just be a financial write off in regards to it not being economical for the insurance to get it fixed in which case it can be re registered.
