A high mount has a much quicker respool speed, as well as the drum does not get hot due to the braking not being inside the spool & the motor being away from the spool.
The advantages of this mean you can run synthetic rope for long periods with out worry of the heat destroying it.
The high mount is also only available in 8000 lb last time I checked, so if it is on a touring outfit towing a camper, it may be punching above it's weight.
Lowmounts come in much higher poundages, think my current is 12000lb from memory. But they come in 15000lb & I am sure higher if you wanted

If it is just for general use, a low mount winch is a much more economical option, there are plenty of low mounts you can run synthetic rope on these days, you just have to watch the heat on extended winch's ( I am talking long periods)
As for the sludging of a low mount, there are water proof kits available for some brands. But a high mount is also prone to the same problems, it is just a little higher to start with.

I have been running t-max lowmounts for a few years now, the only reason I have brought a new one is if I sold the last one on a vehicle
A good service every 12 months & they never miss a beat, & they have had a flogging.

Hope this might have helped you in some way.
I think for what I want a low mount would suffice, I am not one for driving through MUD LAKES if there is an alternative way around without getting wet (I'm not into that thing ) So for getting out of a bog or for steep tracks etc then I suppose a low mount will be all I need. The comparison with the $$$$$ difference will also be the decider.

one thing that i noted that i will mention, is the wire coils up in one spot and jams the winch damaging the winch and the cable very quickly and i amagin that it would not be as prone to on a high mount, i would have seriously considerd the extra cost and fuss had i known this , im talking about a few meters not 5 meters, cheers,

Depends on dollars to start with as 2_door said. $700 for a low maount cheapie (with rope, not cable), or around 3k for a high mount. One is for recreational use (maybe used once a month for example) the other used in comps (once ever hour for example )

Anyway, you get the point, you get what you pay for.
