When I had one of the first model linked to a reservoir tank, it often went off at 4 or 5 in the morning particularly on cold mornings as the air pressure diminished with the colder temp.
My home compressor also goes off under my bedroom at 4 in the morning if I forget to turn it off.

It sounds to me that the ARB pressure sensor does not have enough hysteresis ie difference in pressure between switching off then switching on.

I suspect that the air is just leaking back through the compressor. Most air resevoirs have a valve to stop the back flow of air once the compressor stops, if this leaks then the pressure switch will start the compressor.

You will not detect this type of leak with soapy water (foam) as the leak is internal and the air escapes through the air intake of the compressor.

i forgot to mention, get some soapy water in a squrt bottle, the bubbles will stick out like dogs balls. that is one way we test safty valves.
