Improve your aircon in your Disco1 V8

    Hi folks,

The aircon in my V8 Disco1 update was never that great. I even took it to a aircon place about two years ago to have it checked out and they said it was as good as it was going to get.

Well I unbolted my aircon compressor the other day to get access to something else and decided that I would replace the heat shield which had long lost any form of reflective coating.
The replacement is an identically sized piece of 3mm alloy checkerplate from the scrap bin.

The difference it has made to the temp of the aircon is amazing. I now have to turn the vents away from my hands or turn the fan to 1 so as not to freeze my hands off

So go and check your heat shields before the Summer heat arrives.

I didn't take a photo at the time. I'll get one tomorrow and post it up.

It isn't anything fantastically special though. I just used the old piece of masonite looking stuff that used to have a silver foil backing on the exhaust manifold side as a template and cut out the new piece and drilled two rivet holes in the same place as the original holes.

I looked at making it bigger but it was already as big as it could be.

It's for my RRC ... Don't have any heat shield's at all

I had the A/C all redone last Christmas and also installed a new compressor
The "head pressure" was very high ... & the A/C mechanic said it was because of the old style condenser up front wasn't efficient ... It gets cold ... but if you know an extra /// I'm all ears

If your RRC is a post 90 model with upgraded aircon, then the head pressure should not be high.
The main reason the head pressure gets high is that the fans are not working.
Maybe pull your grille off and visually check that both fans are working ( and maybe see if you can stop them), and not just being turned by the viscous flow.
Both my fans died just before a recent big trip to the Kimberley and I only discovered it when my belt started squealing on start up in Kununurra.

I had my aircon checked and regassed last week, after I fitted new fans( the 10 inch Calibre from Supercheap seem good) , and my vent temp is 6C which the Aircon bloke recons is excellent and the head pressure is fine.

BTW the fans work all the time the aircon is on which the Aircon guy reckons is great for the compressor.

BTTW you can still get the original motors from Rovers North USA for GULP USD 275 each . Calibre are $69.95 but need a bit of fiddling.

    Ta for that Phillip

The A/C was totally renewed & checked
I removed the cabin condenser and replaced the TX valve ... also blew out the condenser with "nitrogen?"
Replaced all High & low hoses (removed inline filter at firewall)
    Replaced all O rings
    Replaced the compressor
    Replaced the Dryer
Blew out the front condenser with "Nitrogen?"

The system was filled & checked on News years eve .... it was a 36 degrees in the shade //

All the fans work, with plenty of air flow when the head pressure was checked ... My RRC has 2 dates ... 1989 on one tag & 1990 on another tag .. so I should have the upgraded A/C??

The A/C mechanic is a, long time old school show .... been there for "donkey's years" ... and actually does the work for the our WA "Dealer"
He didn't think much of the front condenser ... we had a look in the "radiator book" and it looks as tho a 94 Disco condenser is "worth a look" at for a "high efficiency unit"

BTW ... For those suffering a restriction and thinking of the TX valve?? ....
In the original setup ... the high pressure hose that goes to the cabin ... on the firewall .... there is a metal pipe inline connection ... this is a inline filter ... they apparently get blocked and cause a restriction // If your A/C mechanic is blaming your TX being blocked // remove this inline filter first

I just had a look at the manual and the upgrade (89 model) has the position on the selector lever for cool air through the vents and warm at feet. A white and blue arrow.
Also they have vertical evaporator fan motors and a vacuum motor to do the split level stuff . You will have a round vacuum reservoir ball under the bonnet.

So it looks like you may still have something wrong as yours should be identical to mine. BTW the performance on mine is with 134A with no TX valve change. The gas was changed 2 years ago and worked fine until the inoperative fans increased the head pressure and allowed some of the gas to leak out.
