    v8 Clutch fan

Anyone got any tips to undoing the thread on clutch fan on a 94 disco??
I know they have a left hand thread, but just can't seem to get mine undone, and the bloody thing won't lock in, causing it to run hot.

    Thanks Luke

Try getting a bar in on the nuts at the back to lock it up.
I have heard of people jamming the spanner then turning over but unsure how well(or safe this is).

Without looking at mine I can't remember which thread it is, but as a rule to loosen you turn it the same way the fan goes when the engine is running. I am pretty sure the serpentine belt 3.9 is left hand thread.

I had mine off recently on my 95 D1. To undo I turned the nut anti clockwise.
To lock it up I purchased the special slim long handle spanner set from Difflock. One spanner is used to lock up the nuts while you use the other to undo the nut. Takes only a few seconds.

I am pretty sure that A serpentine is RH thread IE conventional as my V belt is LH thread. Just get the correct spanner ( I bought one at Supercheap) If necessary stuff a rag between the belt and a pulley, and give the spanner a sharp tap with a hammer. Regard sPhilip A

PhillipA is correct, regarding the serpentine belts. I had a 96 V8. Which was a serpentine belt. I found out that it is a right handed thread (normal) by bashing it tighter and tighter. Until I eventually realised that the thread is right handed....

Vektools, was where I purchased a tool to do the job, as well as a 36 mm spanner for good measure.

Thanks everyone for your help particuarly PhilipA and duncanw.
Definatley RH thread, with the serpentine belt, as thats the way the fan spins as mentioned, few good belts with a spanner and hammer and off it came.

I dunno how many times we've said on this forum that it undoes in the direction of fan rotation and that applies to V-belt and serpentine., A search would have found it.

    Here's a reply I wrote earlier:

BTW, The way I remember is that it undoes in the same direction as the fan rotates.
