    Gutless 97 TDI

    Hi all.

I just inherited a 97 Disco TDI, its a great vehicle and love everything about it except it's soooooooo gutless and i don't know if that is just the way it is or if something might be wrong.

as an example, i was driving up greenmount hill in WA yesterday, i hit the bottom doing the 80k speed limit and by the top i was subconsciously rocking in the seat trying to get over the top doing 40k and the disco was screaming it's box off.

It's okay on the flat, once up to speed, as long as no hills.

Any ideas on what i should check?

    Cheers

You say "get over the top doing 40k and the disco was screaming it's box off", I gather it is an auto? Are you talking redline screaming?

It might be normal (doesn't sound like it though) so get someone who knows the cars to have a drive.

If it's slow, it could be something simple like a blocked turbo pipe or the pump timing might be out of whack.

Also check for slack in the acc. cable, this can make a big difference. It shouldnt be screaming at all, if its revving its head off and going nowhere then clutch is fooked or auto needs a service.

Is it auto or manual, sounds like a transmission problem if the engine is running at high revs. or it could be a turbo issue, check all your pipes.

Would the engine not be sluggish and struggling if it were a lift pump?

...also worth checking out the top end of the injector pump. (Have a look through Jokers recent threads as there's quite a bit of info there)

    G'Day
I go up and down greenmount hill every day and I was having the same prob in my TDi.
I did some research and did the following :

*Removed intercooler, cleaned and repair match head size hole in core !
*Adjusted some slack out of the throttle cable
*Removed secondary Foam from Air Filter (as I run Uni-Filter)
*Adapted back of radiator cowling to allow more airflow
*Replaced boost hose and drilled and tapped new fitting into plenum & re-plumb.
*check all hose's for internal de-lamination.

Also I fitted my Boost and EGT gauges and I am getting about 15 - 16lb boost and was able to fine tune the IP to get a good result !

All in all the power has picked up to what I want it to be !! pull up greenmount easily in 4th with 265/75R16 10ply mud tyres (heavy buggers)

    Hope that helps
    Cheers

im having the same problem in my 300tdi im currently trying to sort out gearbox issues which i suspect could be the cause of my problems once thats sorted ill be looking at turbo hoses i know im running 16psi but so not sure if that means they are fine, next i will get the intercooler flushed, after that look at the lift pump
