my first response was in answer to the question of

    "whats the square hole for?"

the 3 hold cover I expect is an inspection plate.

whip it off and take a photo of what you see there.

I'm expecting to find that its an auto and thats the access point to get in to assist in positioning the TC to bolt it up to the flex plate.

Either that or someones gone to a lot of effort to modify the gearbox to put in a clutch brake so you dont have to rely on the syncros to stop all the shafts before you select first or reverse.

I thinkit gives you access to the flywheel ring gear to Lock it from spinning whilst you undo the torque convertor bolts .

yes its an auto sorry!!......and excuse the ignorance but if i do take a look will oil come from there ?

so the oil coming form the hole would indicate i have a leaking seal to take care of ?

    cheers

ok since its an auto remove that plate with the 3 holes in it.

turn the engine by hand and wipe the TC down with a metho or solvent soaked rag through that hole.

then start and run the engine for a few minutes.

If the TC gets wet with oil from transmission seal its the converter seal thats starting to leak if it gets wet from the engine side then its the rear main OR the back of the sump/access seal

Yes but unless it's really going to bother you put up with it.
It's a big job to fix it, the Tranny and transfer case need to come out to replace the seals.
The rear engine seal needs the sump engine removed, to replace the T seals, and main rear crank seal.
The Tranny will have to be removed to replace the tranny shaft seal.
I found it easiest by removing the gear shift consul and tackling the job with an engine crane in via the passenger side door, sliding the tranny/transfer case back and down. Also by hanging the tranny assembly on the engine crane, it lowers the bell housing sufficiently to undo the Top bell housing retaining bolts. They were actually real easy to get to. ( A lot of poeple reckon the are difficult to get to, but I had no problems this way)

Or you go at it with a transmission jack from underneath.
I did it on my own , it's just time consuming unbolting everything, tail shafts, cross member, stabilizer, exhaust, breathers, sump.
Oh and if you have a prop shaft nut tool, OH YOU ARE IN HEAVEN, make it sooooo much easier and fast!
