    Auto box no drive - D1 V8

    Hey Guys,

does anyone have any idea what has gone wrong with my disco?

car is a 1997 discovery 1 auto V8 - transfer / box / engine all standard as they came

the engine is running fine but i have no drive through the auto box / transfer case

the car still stops when in park but i cant get any drive through any gears in hi / low - lock / unlock

i dont think its the auto selector as i can still get park, CDL light still goes on and off when moving the selector

auto box oil is still up to level and transfer box oil is still smooth - no metal or anything

also auto box is silent - no grinding or crunching noises, happened pretty suddenly, drove out of my driveway in low then went to put it in reverse and nothing

has anyone come accross this or had it happen to them? any recomendations?

is there any way to check what it could be without going as far as pulling the gearbox and transfer out?

    cheers

Sounds like transfer has slipped into (and is staying in) no mans land. With auto in neutral and engine running get physical with transfer lever.

jack up one wheel on the front make sure the tcase is in gear, the CDL is out, put the auto in park and try to turn the wheel, it should rock a little and then stop. If thats a case the driveline as far as the back of the auto is sound. (unless you have the BW tcase and the chain is wrapped around the bottom gear)

now with the wheel back on the ground manually select 1st or reverse on the selector and attempt to drive.

If that works once the car is doing about 10kph throttle off select 2 or drive and if the vehicle keeps accelerating and changes up gears then the problem is the internal sprag clutch and the box requires an overhaul.

If you get no drive then there is 4 generic problems

    1. the pickup has dropped out of the pump and the pump is sucking air not oil, drop the pan and replace the strainer. (this is DIY and is about 2/5 on the spanner count)
    2. a pump seal or the pump is fragged and the front half of the box requires work (this can be done yourself but is a bout a 4/5 on the spanner count)
    3. an internal drive member has let go and the box needs to be overhauled (not usually the case and not a DIY and is the full 5/5 on the spanner count)
    4. Depending on the Tcase you have fitted either the chain has let go and is not on the output gear, the selector is not engaging range and its staying in neutral (you should have had the wheel turning in this case though) or the gearbox output shaft has taken some damage. which will usually not transmit drive but will offer enough resistance to stop a hand turned wheel. You should get some noise from the vehicle if this is the case.

tried that and as it should only moved a touch each way

park still engages fine on the box and holds the car - so not the selector, and the CDL selector is still working fine

ill try taking off the oil pan tomorrow night and see what i can do

before you drop the pan try to drive it off with the gearbox locked in 1 on the selector.

If that makes it move theres no point in pulling the sump.

tried driving off in every selection possible

no go at all in anything

oil was also a touch over full when cold idling on level ground

last week i had a bit of trouble getting it into reverse - took 4 or 5 goes but thought the selector might just need some adjustment

then going out the driveway today from drive to go to reverse and nothing - then nothing in any gears

no bangs or crunches or anything - just no drive

hope for a failed pickup seal on the pump or a fractured filter housing.
