    93 D1 3.9 into 97 D1

As the title suggests, I am replacing the 3.9 out of my 97 D1 with one out of a 93 D1. Just wondering if there is any ancilliaries that will need to be swapped, or will everything pretty much bolt straight up? I will be swapping out the 5 spd manuals at the same time, so any advice would be appreciated. Am pretty handy on the tools, and have done my share of parts replacing/fixing, but this will be my first engine swap so any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

The problem lies in that between 93 and 97 there was an update in which the way the ancillaries were connected and configured was changed. If the donor motor is a 3.9, it should be a straight stripped block swap - and most everything should bolt back together.

If the 93 is a V belt engine the distributor drives the oil pump and the crankshaft needs to be altered to use on a crank oil pump engine.

In "Tuning Rover V8 Engines" , Des Hammill states that"These Late front covers >>>>>until December 1993 for Range Rover /Discovery engines"

So look at the oil pump. If it on the front RH then no go. Well not entirely.
If it is a distributor driven oil pump then the woodruff key in the crank is not long enough to engage on the crank driven oil pump and must be lengthened which would involve removing the crank for machining.( This is a condensation of a long passage from Hammill P95)

If you want to be sure remove the distributor and see if it has a wobble drive for the oil pump.

No the V belt 3.9 was introduced in the second half of 93 and the serpentine belt 3.9 was introduced with the updates in Apr/May 94.

The 93, 3.9s are all V belts as mentioned so will cause issues with ancillaries and I think they used a different injection system (no sure on this - certainly different air filter)

Just to be a little more explicit, you cannot use ANY of the ancilliaries and you will need to use the 97 front cover and remove the crank from the 93 engine and have it machined. So IMHO it is not worth it.

Unless you use ALL of the long 93 engine/ancilliaries and then you will have numerous ad libs to do with wiring etc. It will also be illegal as AFAIR you cannot fit an engine of earlier build than the car. It may not be picked up on a engine number check but then it may be.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I was told by my Land Rover mechanic that they were all serpentine belts and that it would be a straight forward swap. I may have to look into it further. Thanks again.
