lol at people that have a fine car like this, get some small niggling problems, fix them all and end up with a great car, and then sell it " incase " something else " might " happen. oh well, means someone else deserving will get a fine car
Erm, this a thread relating to vibration troubleshooting, not a thread on the "Loud whining coming from the western regions of Europe"

so, on the track of vibrations, i have been chasing mine for quite some time. i replaced both engine mounts about 18 months back and it seemed good for a short while and i never really got around to nutting it all out.
well, i figured i might have a problem with one of the mounts........
turns out 1 of the mounts i didnt have a problem with, but all 3 others i did, 1 engine and 2 gearbox mounts.
all appears normal here. checked the engine mount from below with a pen in the inspection hole it it seemed ok from there. off with it anyhow.
hmmmm, are these mounts supposed to be 2 peice, not according to the new ones i had in packets ready to fit.
guess what. its as smooth as now
still a bit of harshness around 2200rpm, but its 99% better than it was yesterday, no surprise looking at those mounts.
not sure if the gearbox mount or mounts may have been broken all along, and that has caused premature failure of the engine mount at only 18 months, or whether the engine mount was a dud and that has caused the gearbox mounts to explode.
needless to say, check your gearbox mounts as well as engine mounts.
i would say take em out, only bout 1/2 hour job for both, quite easy to get to. engine mounts not so easy![]()
My recently acquired 99 D2 TD5 has a rumble in the engine which goes through the whole drive line from 2000 - 2250rpm.
It starts perfect from cold/hot and accelerates smoothly except in this rev range
You can feel this in neutral and revving within these rpms and ive been through the drive train, all fine
I cant find anything that looks wrong but to me seems a balancing problem with the engine around those RPM's
Obviously these vehicles didn't do this from new, just a thought being a 5 cylinder and imagine a tad harder to balance, after 10 or more yrs could the harmonic balancer get out of wack.
anyone tried a new balancer with similar symptoms to mine?
This whole vibration thng is a bit of a mystery.
My 2001 model had it and I tried to get LR to fix it and they eventually concluded that it was just an unwanted characteristic of the engine (along the lines of your point about 5 cylinders) I used to have a Passat 5 cylinder many years ago and that was not the smoothest engine either.
My 2004 Disco was much better new - very minor vibration at the rpms you mention but, it has since got worse (147K). I have not changed the harmonic balancer but perhaps you have a point,

thanx , ive read the thread from start to current,
established the fact that many different vib/rubble issues on here caused by various different reasons.
Ive pin pointed my rubble from the engine at a specific RPM range.
As stated, the TD5 engine didn't do it from new, so something must be getting out of whack the more the engine is used.
If i had a spare grand i'd try a brand new harmonic balancer,
Many people on here spend lots of $$ bux with process and elimnation, and still not 100% satisfied, i suppose why this thread goes for so long!
Call Ross Clothier at Ross Balancers here in Sydney. In fact better idea. Anyone who has a stuffed or just old spare one send it to me and I can get him to test & analyse them to see just how much of an issue they could be causing. He specialises in manufacturing aftermarket balancers, in steel and alloy. If they are the cause then we can look at having them put in as a stock item and he can do a manufacturing run for a group buy. He will also do other pulleys and idlers, in fact I'm running two of his pulleys after loosing one during an engine swap. so now one is a little smaller and the other much larger, a different belt. But most importantly double bearings, replaceable, std sizes that are common to just about all idlers but two of them.
