    Angry No Go!!

Hooked a 10'x9' covered trailer (hire type) on the back of my disco 2 td5 (with deisel power chip) and dragged it half full from melbourne to wangaratta and back today and found that almost the entire trip (99%) it wouldn't get higher than 3rd gear. This meant at between 80-100km/hr I was sitting around 2800-3200rpm for the entire trip ....with it kicking back to 4000+ rpm every now an then on some of the inclines..... very unsettling !!
I stopped on the way back and removed the dp chip which appeared to not make any difference ... maybe it's faulty.
After removing the chip I found that when I started off again I had both S and M lights flashing at me. Pulled over down the road, hooked up the nanocom and reset the error code after it said it could not read the can interface. This fixed the lights problem ... but still stayed in what appeared to be 3rd gear the rest of the way back.
I am just about to do a Tombie2 remap and an intercooler upgrade and am now wondering if this is going to fix this problem or do I have another issue here?
I'm not far from heading off on a long trip ... pulling a 20' van.. and I'm really not looking forward to a trip around Oz in 3rd gear
Any thoughts on what might be causing this lack of power would be appreciated. .... thanks... Dave

p.s. I have recently replaced all fluids/filters including transmission oil (which showed no real signs of degradation or smell of burning) and I replaced the maf only yesterday with a new genuine siemens unit.

Sounds like it may have gone into limp home mode, I think there may be another issue

Have you checked the air flow readings with the Nanocom?

    Baz.

    thanks baz,

I don't think I was in limp mode as the trans was changing through all gears and did on a couple of occasions go into 4th when coasting downhill with a slight amount of throttle.. just did not want to get out of 3rd.

I will put the nanocom onto it today to check airflows.. what should I be looking for?
    thanks... Dave

Have a look at your intercooler hoses.

Baz is thinking the right line...

Faulty MAF in a TD5 Auto messes with the Trans Control and shift points.

    hi tombie,
brand new genuine maf went in the day before towing the load due to a broken element in the previous one
because the dpchip may be faulty and has also now been removed, I am effectively running a stock standard motor ... could it be that the motor lacks sufficient power towing this load and as a consequence will not change into top gear .. as the ecu considers the engine to be under too much strain?

Air flow reading should be around 60 to 90 at idle and 500+ at 3000rpm, climb a hill when you do this.

Shaker could be on to something, take your intercooler hoses off and check the inside of them, they may have delaminated, causing your lack of power.

Just on the off chance though, check your injector harness and turbo modulator.
    Cheers Baz.

please take note. years of being in the auto spares industry a strong caution. just because you replaced the AFM with a brand new genuine unit, dont assume its not the problem. i can tell you endless stories of workshops wasting hours tracing faults finally to go back to one of the first parts that were replaced and find they had a new faulty part.

    g'day baz,
just got back from another run to the property up north dragging a reasonably heavy trailer that I'd estimate around 2000kg all up and had a change to note a few nanocom readings on the way.
Airflow on a flat straight road was 350@2000rpm and 485@3000
Ambient Pressure on 87 and Manifold Pressures of 129@2000 and 196@3000
    EGR was 20@2000 and 0 (zero)@3000
    EGR modulator 0(zero) @2000 and 3000
    Wastegate modulator 20@2000 and 0(zero)@3000

Can you make any sense of these figures?
Airflow seems a bit low although it was not taken on a hill climb.
I would also have thought that the EGR should show something ... it is still in circuit.. I have not had a chance to bypass and I have been advised by a number of persons that it is a waste of time doing.. I think I will still do it as the blanking plate is an ideal place to mount a thermocouple for the EGT guage
I have also done another check of my fuel consumption again this trip and sitting around 90km the whole trip (in very cool fresh air) economy has worked out to around 18L/100km

18l/100 isn't that bad towing around 2ton (I'm assuming this weight is what your towing), although it could be a bit better, towing that weight I would think 15 or 16l/100k would be better, as a comparison, we tow a 1.4ton camper, I'm fully loaded in the back of the car, 3 adults 2 dogs, have a medium chip, 3" exhaust, 32s, bullbar and winch, roof racks, long range tank, EGR bypass, turbo wound up, bigger intercooler, silicon hoses, we average 14l/100k on a trip, worst we have recorded was 17l/100k crossing the Simpson desert, best was 12.3l/100k.

The air flow should go over 500, seeing as it's a new MAF and your under that much load with the weight your towing, 485 isn't that bad if not under load, mine wouldn't go over 350, you may need to find someone with a TD5 and borrow their MAF to check if it is the problem, check the reading in their car first.

Your EGR may be sticking looking at that, give it a clean.

The readings for the wastegate modulator should be instant, if it is, then it's working, the numbers do taper off.

Manifold pressure is normally around the 200 to 220 mark though for a standard TD5, that's going off what Tombie2 has mentioned in the past, 237 is when the ECU detects overboost AND it goes into limp mode.

Have you checked your intercooler hoses?

Have a look at this thread on boost pressure
    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-...-pressure.html

    Baz.

PS anyone with any ideas other than me, most of what I've said is from my experiences reading my TD5, what I'm saying may be wrong for his TD5, ANYONE??
    Cheers Baz.
