is there much play in the diff's
I have a small but noticably growing amount of backlash in my D2's drive line (4.6 litre auto which does a lot of heavy towing) which I think is most likely to be in the transfer box.
With with the transfer box removed from the car (and the autobox), I can rotate the front and rear output shafts at least 30 degrees relative to each other with the centre diff locked. This seems excessive, but I have not found any reference to allowable play in the manual.
Does anyone know how much play is acceptable?

I was thinking the same as I travel down the Western Ring Road (Long term parking lot). I get a small fairly quiet clunk as I slow and exellerate at slow speeds. Throttle off, throttle back on = clunk? This is only noticable at slow speed ?
All the Uni's etc. look good so I'm hoping this is normal, there would have to be some freeplay with 3 diffs and a transfer case etc.
Hope it's not just mine and is normal?

yep, same same here.
Slowing down to a stop, and it gives a clunk going back into first gear, (auto). Dont notice it taking off though, probably cos I tend to ease away from take off. Front shaft is new, rear one seems fine.
Cant help with allowable play though sorry mate. Any related vibration, or is there just clunk??
iv got a sloppy box it has felt like its getting worse, just checked with front drive shaft off center diff ingaged it looks like 45 deg. one of the bolts will move from one webbing to a bit past the next webbing. that would certinly constatue a clunk between exl and decelany one know how hard it is to swap boxes ?
One of the big probs with the D2 is the lack of a CDL. The centre diff thrust washers on the spider gears get a fair workout with the TC pulsing etc etc. I have had to toss out centre diff housings on early D2's as the thrust washers have disintegrated and the gears have worn their way into the housing itself, causing huge backlash.
Best way to check if the thrusts are worn away (apart from dissassembly), is to remove the PTO cover and check in there for bits of bronze flakes settled down in the bottom of the 'well' behind the bearing for the input gear. if ANY are present you more than likely have some serious wear in that department.
I have removed a TC to replace the input seal and intermediate shaft Orings to find almost a whole thrust washer worth of bronze bits sitting in behind the input seal, this was a very worn centre diff

Hi JC and thanks for this post. When I replaced the input gear and bearings i did find quite some red copper bits. Can the thrust washers (marked "4" on the image) be replaced on their own, or maybe the whole cross shaft assy? Or does the whole center diff need replacing?

[FONT=""][COLOR=""][SIZE=""]i to get a bad clunk only mainly when cold,but when slowing right down and coasting say at about 40kh.but again not all the time and when cold.i swear i can feel it on the floor(drivers side)like a stick and flicked up or something.and no my shaft is fine and new!has me and the specialist stumped.they put it down to backlash but im not even sure they heard what i have been?is this normal?[/SIZE][/COLOR][/FONT]
