Have you tried just using low range first gear without the HDC Mick ?

Don't know how that would go in an auto - but I'm with LandyAndy as far as the manual is concerned at least. Low first gives better control than HDC on a really steep descent, and definitely low range reverse if you have to do it backwards.

Not that I have had too many opportunities to prove it - there's not a lot of steep hills around Kalgoorlie - but have found a couple of spots to play. The Heap Leach pads out at a previous jobs was a great place for showing up Toymota's.
    Cheers .........

I was definitely in low range first, and still wishing that I had an anchor to chuck out the window

Seriously though, I was just surprised how fast (and in reality 7kph is not all that fast) the HDC allowed it to go before it intervened. Once it came in, the HDC did an amazing job though.

Sounds like you were pretty lucky (if that is the right word) despite "falling over"...how bad was the damage and which panels etc.
    Any distortion to the roof?

Basically the "dead weight" of the motor being heavier than the rear end forces the front end to "try to turn the car around" ... IE .. the heaviest part of the car (Front) wants to go "down hill" and overtake the rear end.

Coupled up with a ABS system that will not "solid lock" your wheels, and keep releasing the brakes as your still slipping (All that brake chatter) and she's all over, Red Rover

But basically, when going in reverse, be prepared to just drive it down the hill ... and may god be in the passenger seat as your co driver, & help you navigate on the way (down) when / as the brakes refuse to lockup solid (ABS Chatter)

I strongly recommend you do not go down a hill in reverse unless you really have to. In my case I was only testing the damn thing.

The most difficult damage to repair would be the crinkled up corner of the roof on the front passenger side. Also the sill bent down to prevent the door from opening. Surprisingly no damage to windows or wing mirror.

    Other damage includes:
minor panel damage to the two doors
moderate panel damage to the two guards
bent up exhaust before tail pipe
nearly all plastic bits on passenger side broken
possibly front and rear bumper will need replacing

I'm a bit worried the bill maybe North of 11k, in which case the insurance company may write it off.

I looked on the internet for a like for like replacement and it seems the prices have rocketed over the last 12 months.

    I coun't find a decent 2002 SE7 V8 SLS ACE, 100k on clock, for under $23K.

This one cost me $16K on road before 2"lift, CDL installed.

As I stated earlier, I will post pics as soon as I can work out how to.

I have a bare body shell you are welcome to - for nothing. The damage to this one is a crease in the front passenger side inner guard and a crease in the radiator support panel. The drivers side inner guard may alsy be a slight bit out, but I don't think so.

The down side is that this is in Sydney and you are down south. Having said that, we went to Moe last year with a trailer and picked up a P38, our son Andrew and myself did the round trip in 24hrs (pretty full on though)

Please let us know - I was going to put this up for a freeby anyhow but you seem to be in need. Also if you want some pics, I will post them.

    Cheers, Erich

    Thanks for the offer Erich,

My hope is that the damage will be repaired under my insurance. It's booked in on the 12th April for assessment by the insurance company. Before that I need to gather two quotes for the work.

If the car is written off, then my intention is to buy back the wreck and rebuild it myself in which case I would be very interested in your kind offer. Of course I will not know what is going on until the 12th April. If you are not in a great hurry to get rid of it, and can hang on to it until then, it would be great to know I have this option.

However, I will understand if you wish to move it on before then.

    Thanks again.

    Cheers,
    Alan

    Ouch!

No way I'd use HDC to get me down that backwards (I don't even use it forwards).

HDC is fine for grassy slopes I think, but put in any bumps and it gets messy!

Mate as long as you are all ok & the family? thats all that counts. Its a pain & you feel like crap but it will get repaired & life will go on.
With Erich's kind offer, you cant ask for a nicer bunch of like minded people.
    Happy Easter all.
