Called out the RACV the otherday to help and all the guy did was to get under the back and hit the fuel tank with a rubber mallett. The car stopped again (at the traffic) lights this time armed with my own rubber mallet hit the fuel tank and it started again. Any clues where I should look first. I am thinking fuel pump but would like some suggestions before messing around with fuel.

Fuel pump is relatively easy, just lift the carpet in the load area. There will be a hatch screwed to the floor, under this is the pump assembly. Have a new assembly on hand and it's quite quick to change. Remember a new petrol filtier at the same time.

If you have a Td5 then my experience was, in sequence.

very noisy fuel pump (whine!) - on its way out
difficulty starting
occasionally engine just stopped after idle surging then would start and run like it was on 3 or 4 cylinders
fuel pump replaced
injector seals replaced

all good
