I am currently having problems with my Discovery 2 (2001) with it not starting after switching off the engine. Called out the RACV the otherday to help and all the guy did was to get under the back and hit the fuel tank with a rubber mallett. The car stopped again (at the traffic) lights this time armed with my own rubber mallet hit the fuel tank and it started again. Any clues where I should look first. I am thinking fuel pump but would like some suggestions before messing around with fuel.

TD5 Disco Fuel pump/sender unit - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum
If you have a Td5 then my experience was, in sequence.
very noisy fuel pump (whine!) - on its way out
difficulty starting
occasionally engine just stopped after idle surging then would start and run like it was on 3 or 4 cylinders
fuel pump replaced
injector seals replaced
all good

I have seen quite a few pumps fail as low as 100,000km.
