Theres no LSD back there so go the rear....
I have been thinking of a diff locker for the disco but am unsure whether to put it on the front or back. At the moment I am leaning towards locking the front as this axle is less loaded than the rear and seems to be the one that loses grip. However, a rear locker is cheaper initially and I wonder if the front locker puts extra load on the CV joints, especially when one wheel suddenly loses traction. Clearly twin lockers would be even better but are a lot more expensive and I’m not sure value for money. I find the traction control quite good, mostly.
I have a 2” lifted 2004 manual TD5, running Cooper 245/75/R16 STTs.
What advice and experience do any of you have with the pros and cons of single lockers on front or rear? What are people’s experiences with types/brands of lockers? I understand auto lockers aren’t supposed to be good for permanent 4wd. Are there lockers with electric engagement that work well?
Thanks

As tombie says - if only one then rear. The rear has most traction when climbing, and you can engage the rear to keep the car straight when going down steep hills.
I prefer manual lockers, and have MaxiDrive and ARB. Both work well IME. McNamara lockers are also a good option.
KAM make an e-locker, which some people on here use.
As above, rear first. Both wheels locked at the rear is what you need for hill climbing or getting out of a hole because of weight bias.
Also, sudden loss of traction is far less destructive than sudden gain of traction once wheel speed well above ground/road speed. That's what generally breaks things. In that sense lockers are more kind, but they do cause significantly higher loadings when in turning on high grip surfaces, especially when in the front end.
This may be a stupid question, however;
Is there any benefit of a rear locker without a CDL?
I am thinking there is no benefit and I should wait until I rebuild the transfer case with CDL (2002 D2).
true, no point in rear locker without cdl
No, don't bother with a locker until you have an active CDL. CDL is your first port of call, then rear and then front last.

Second that!
Since activating mine, it has transformed the ability of the car incredibly.
Instant difference. Never thought it would change the vehicle's ability to such an extent.
Though I reckon the 235/85r16 Hankooks helped it out a bit too!!

What the others have said. As a case in point, Travis (Aquarangie?) used to have a RRC with viscous t-case and a rear locker. A worn viscous T-case takes a long time to lock up. I will never forget Trav attempting a hill with the rear locker engaged. The first couple of times (before the centre had "locked") he would stop with only one front wheel spinning and nothing else. The same would happen to you with a rear locker and no CDL.
i can say from experience and since i have both on my car,
the rear locker is the best option of them all, i try TC sometimes first up but it gets me no were with out some nice revs, back back down flick the switch and 1st low and 9times out of 10 u will be able to crawl over what ever was stopping you,
i have a arb locker and yes they are expensive,, BUT the positive just never end, and its not just that its a locking diff but allso its not a rover center witch are the same as you get in your little RC cars, rubbish
so your not going to break a locker, the next thing to break its axles but you going to have to be driving pretty hard to do that,
what ever locker you get you will love it to death, and forget about the cost the first time you get to the top of that hill
i have a arb air locker in the rear and soon getting a front, all up cost about 1500 id say,, fitted with the small air compressor,
